Kilkenny forward Eddie Brennan has retired from inter-county hurling, RTÉ Sport understands.

In a hugely successful career, the 33-year-old won Graigue-Ballycallan clubman won eight All-Irelands, 10 Leinster titles, four National Hurling Leagues and four All-Star awards.

He played a key role in Kilkenny's All-Ireland triumph over Tipperary last September, setting up a crucial goal for Richie Hogan as the Cats won 2-17 to 1-16.

But he has decided to call time on his career before the start of the 2012 National Hurling League campaign.

He is the second high-profile Kilkenny player to leave the panel recently, following in the footsteps of James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick who announced his decision to quit inter-county hurling in November.

A genuinely great forward, seems like a nice guy and I really can't think of a bad word to say about him. A pivotal member of the golden generation, sad to see him go but all good things must come to an end.

Best of luck to "Fast Eddie" with everything in the future. Keep catching them criminals... :D

Fair play to Eddie Brennan he had a great inter county career and i believe he's the only player to play senior for the county, before he even played senior for his club.. Broke my heart every time he played against Waterford so good news he's gone from that sense:D.. The man was a near dead cert to get the first goalscorer bet in the bookies he served us well.. Best of luck in the future

Destroyed cork in the semi last year; I thought he was pretty decent this year in the final.

KK will miss him no doubt; martin comerford last year was hard to replace last year and I think Eddie Brennan even harder to replace. Fast Eddie closing in on goal was a great symbol of the Kilkenny team in its prime.

They played Waterford in last year's Semi.

Judging by when he said "this year in the final" in guessing he meant the previous semi-final against Cork...

yep....I was answering your point that he hadnt done much in the last year or two.....i was assuming you meant 2010 and 2011 rather than 2011 and 2012.....

I admit he hasnt shown much form so far in 2012. you are quite right there.

and i believe he's the only player to play senior for the county

How was this possible??? Was it just a case of somebody at county level rating him more highly than those at his club?

It's possible his club didn't have a senior team at the time?

e.g. Bryan Cullen was only playing intermediate when Dublin won the All Ireland this year.

Niall Gilligan did the same as far as i remember in 1997

Class hurler, eight All Ireland medals is some haul! As a KK man, he gave us so many great memories of his blistering runs and fantastic goals. Eddie will be forever remembered for his pace, which he used to terrify defences. He was such a committed player, always willing to train to the best of his ability and rarely injured. Eddie was the quintessential panel member, worked his socks off for the team and encouraged the younger players in the latter years. He was/is a fantastic role model for ALL hurlers, showing what can be achieved with hard work, graft and perseverance when he didn't make the county minor team... An absolute gentleman to boot. Eddie, I wish you and your family all the best and thanks for the skill, poise, pace and leadership that you showed so well down the years. What a legacy you leave behind!

Graigue-Ballycallan were definitely a senior club in 1999-2000. I have no idea why Eddie hadn't played senior club hurling by the time he was 21. It seems a strange one. It would need someone closer to the club to explain. Injuries, travel, perhaps?

    Eddie's honours:

    Inter-county:
    All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (8): 2000, 2002, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011
    Leinster Senior Hurling Championship (11): 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011
    National Hurling League (4): 2000, 2003, 2005, 2009
    Walsh Cup (4): 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009
    All-Ireland Under-21 Hurling Championship (1): 1999
    Leinster Under-21 Hurling Championship (1): 1999

    Club:
Leinster Senior Club Hurling Championship (1): 2000
Kilkenny Senior Club Hurling Championship (1): 2000

What a haul of medals!
Eddie was a fantastic player for KK and crucial to the success of the team during the past 10 years. He received a lot of criticism over his performance in the 2010 AI final against Tipp and during the 2011 NHL campaign (including a lot from me). There was also a few eyebrows raised over him starting the 2011 AI final (I was very skeptical myself!!). But, he managed to turn back the tide and he gave his heart and soul during that match. The goal he set-up for Richie Hogan will be my highlight of Eddie Brennan's career. Eddie Brennan: legend.
