    Hi All,
Looking for some advice/knowledge. I'm going to America on Honeymoon in about 2 month time and have finally got to the bit i care about Car rental.
I have been having a quick look at the standard websites and have seen Dodge chargers that we could afford, But will they live up to what i would be hoping for out of an american muscle car or is there a company/car i should go for?
If anyone has any experience I would love to hear,

O and is it wrong that this may have me more excited than the wedding? (dont tell the fiancee)

I've rented a few times in the U.S and found Avis to be very good on price and their service is pretty spot on too. Cheaper if you use www.avis.com instead of www.avis.ie for some peculiar reason. They tend to have cars they want to get off their lot when you arrive so look out for the deals even if you've booked a standard car - I was offered a Mustang instead of the Chevy Trailblazer i booked, stuck with the Chevy for the suitcases!
As for the Charger, its really not that wonderful as the rentals are the 4 door version i think, so its a shared platform with about 5 other 'sedans'. if you could get the coupe it might be better.

I had a Chevy Camaro SS in Texas about 18 months ago. Bright yellow. Think Bumblebee without the black stripe. I hired it from Hertz, and it definitely lived up to expectations. Got plenty of admiring glances too! :D

Last year I had a Charger in California and was a bit disappointed. It was comfortable enough, but very basic inside and not particularly exciting. Definitely not a muscle car. The 2-door version is the Challenger and is a muscle car, but I haven't seen any available to hire.

I hired through ebookers.ie as they included insurances and worked out cheaper than hiring directly from the companies.

I've been in the US a bit this year & I've rented the Mustang, the Camaro, the Challenger & the Charger..

Most (I think all) rental Chargers are not the Hemi :( so whilst it's a nice comfy roomy 4 door car it's NOT a muscle car..

Go for either the Camaro or the Challenger, they are both good cars & closer to that muscle car look & feel your looking for

One website i was on said it had 2 door charger or similar. Since it seems this car doesn't exist anymore what would they have meant?
I hate that or similar they stick on every car

One piece of advise, whoever you rent with, join their membership scheme.

Hertz Number 1 Club (looks like Gold membership now needs a certain number of rentals :()

    Avis Preffered

In the US, it should mean you arrive at the car hire lot and your car is parked in a bay with your name on an electronic sign and you just show your licence on the way out - they have all the other details on file for you so you don't have to que at the desk and spend ages filling in the various bits of paperwork.

Free to join and well worth it.

Not sure if other companies offer this service, I've membership of both but haven't used Hertz in ages.

My wife is American and we're over and back quite a bit, I tend to use Dollar rentals as I've found them to be the cheapest generally. They have the muscle cars as well (although I tend to rent over sized SUV's).

Book an economy car, play up the Honeymoon and being Irish in your great USofA and how Assume everything is Here when you get to the counter. Stick in a few begora's and some blarney they'll upgrade you.

Even if they don't upgrade you to something special you can always pay the extra at the counter for it.

    Edit
One thing to note is that most car rentals only guarantee a class of car not a car. So if you book a Hemi you could end up with a barge. Better off trying to blag something at the counter

Good advice here. The honeymoon angle is great (got me out of a $300 baggage fee last year with Delta) and the more begorrah and twee you can be the better. They love that stuff. (although the latinos, not so much). This has worked for me a few times.

Heres another tip for frequent travelers to states,

Always complain about something when you leave the car back, and that you weren't satisfied, eg there was a noise coming from the wheel on the freeway etc.. and just act disappointed.
They will give you a sort of code and the next time you hire a car you will get a FREE upgrade. :)

oh yeah I forgot to add, depending on state and company .....ASK about driving over state lines, some companies will not insure you if you take it out of state, and will have to pay an add on to get insured

I rented a Mustang from Hertz before...it was expensive but worth it. One thing to watch out for is that he price you often see on the website, especially for the special cars, is often for a limited mileage, like 200 miles. After that, you pay a rate per mile which can be as high as 50 cents. So make you know what the story is up front!

Also, don't expect too much from these cars - the Mustang, Challenger and Camaro all come in either V6 or V8 variants afaik...and most of the rental versions are going to be the V6 version, probably less than 300HP. Sounds like a lot, but it won't be OTT.

That said, they are fantastic cars, great fun to drive. They make you feel special. The performance out of the 2010 Mustang V6 was fine, not the rocket ship that the GT (V8) version would be but still not slow either. But these cars have a unique feel, the driving position, the looks, the rumble of the engine, the roar when you gas it between traffic lights...that's what these cars are all about! Don't expect sports car performance, and just enjoy them for what they are.

Are you sure it didn't say Challenger? Lots of people mix up Challenger & Charger when talking about Dodge cars... (I know, I own a Challenger & if I had a dollar for everytime some commented on how much they love my Charger I'd have enough to buy a '69 Charger now  )

Last time there was a 2 door Charger was back in the '70's.. so book one & kick up a fuss when you get there & you don't get the General Lee :D

But I second the be careful of the "or similar" bit... you can end up with a barge, I normally talk up the fact that I love all things American & how I really wanted a muscle car & they have always managed to find me one...

If they still say they don't have one, ask if they just had one returned.. my brother & I did this back in July & we got a beautiful Camaro that had just come in.. so it was still wet from it's wash & hadn't be hoovered but we didn't care about that

It said charger but was through a third party website so may have been a typo.
Is insurance included with all companies or is it extra. It seems to be mentioned on some sites and not on others so i'm a but confused.
How much of an upgrade can you really get by mentioning the honeymoon? One level or from economy to top of the range?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 762 ✭✭✭irisheddie85

Oh to get an upgrade should you book direct or does through a third company make it less likely

Depends always read the small print when booking.

How good at talking sh!te are you? You can get lucky and get a super upgrade or a good one. You can always pay for an upgrade if really stuck they are usually open to a bit of bargaining at the counter.

    I'd say direct would best.

This is the way to do it. First time in California we booked a standard car from dollar which they didn't have so we got a free upgrade to a mustang.

Last year we were in Florida and again had booked a standard car from hertz, I asked what they had in the garage and they offered me a deal to upgrade to a mustang convertable for $220 for two weeks. Not a lot really as the original rental was $80.

A friend of mine went all out to book a mustang only for them not to have it when he arrived. They rarely hold cars for customers, you are better off to book the cheapest car and see what they have knocking around. I think i'll go for a camaro next time, the mustang is a little tame by comparison.

    Hi Eddie,
You haven't said where is the States you are looking to rent. I rented last year for a week in Florida and a further ten day from San Francisco. The vehicles available vary from State to State, as do the conditions (drivers age, insurance required etc.). In the case of Florida I found www.resortautos.com to be the cheapest (I booked a Mustang Convertible and paid Euro 240.00 for the week including absolutely everything!!). For San Francisco the cheapest were www.avis.com and again www.resortautos.com. Once again I got the Mustang but it cost me Euro 375 for ten days, as they have an environment tax in California (feckin Tree Huggers :)

I used Fox rental when I was in the states recently. Not only can you specify the make and model you want, when you arrive they will let you pick the actual car, i.e - that red one over there or whatever. I got a convertible 'Stang and it worked out about $70 a day including insurance and sat nav. They also have Challengers and Camaros but they only do the V6 though. I would have prefered the V8 but seeing as I have two at home it didn't really bother me.

I went to Florida last summer, booked myself a run of the mill standard car with Alamo. I used carhire3000, ended up upgrading to the Dodge Charger below for an extra €90 for the 2 weeks I had it. It was a pleasure to drive!

Whatever car you decide to go with good luck to you but if you are a smart man you will spend more time researching insurance than what car to hire.

My old lad had a very minor (and I mean VERY minor <3mph) interaction with a pedestrian when backing up his rental in a parking lot on the way to the airport while in the states, cops came and according to the cop that attended he was very very lucky to have full cover ($1,000,000) ... The cop took his passport and only returned it when he could prove that he had full coverage. A $1,500,000 Court case ensued and the insurance company was in constant contact with him and asked him to return to the states to give evidence (he even "won" a holiday for two to the states....in a competition that he never entered) They researched his interests in Ireland, properties etc. and he was told by his brief here not to go to the states under any circumstances to give evidence and that if the court awarded a figure that exceeded his insurance it was possible that he might be liable to cover the shortfall himself.

I'm just back from the states and lived there for 4 years and there is amazingly no such thing as unlimited insurance, I had maximum cover for my cars and even then they only had coverage for a maximum of $250,000 which was further broken down into a maximum of $100,000 for property damage and a maximum of $150,000 for personal injury, not to exceed $50,000 for any individual involved (which in the US would cover about 1 week in hospital) .... I had a friend there who was a heart surgeon and lived in a kip of an apartment because of a motor accident he had where $5,000,000 was awarded to somebody he injured and his insurance only covered a fraction of the claim and he had attachments on his earnings to cover the award (+interest).

Be very very careful when insuring a car there, the rental company only cares about the car, once they have either your credit card or insurance to cover their vehicle they couldnt care less about you in the event of an accident.

I've always book my rentals through www.carhire3000.ie and find them excellent and extremely helpful and easy to deal with in the even of a problem.

I always just book something half decent with them(standard 300c usually) and then when I get to the car hire company just ask what deals they have on upgrades. I've ended up with various Cadillacs(Escalade, STS V8, CTS) as well as Hummers(H2 and H3) and once, a 300C srt-8:P.

Hi im going to be renting in san francisco.
It looks like booking anything and look for an upgrade is the way i will go. The then Wife is very good at sweet talking so might get a good deal.

Is there a way to get xtra insurance or is it whatever the company provides?

They give you insurance options at the counter normally. IIRC in California you have to pay for the first tank of fuel up front too.

We went to Florida for our honeymoon, and I rented from Hertz Fun Collection a Corvette ZHZ. 6.2 V8 with 434bhp. If you rent from their Fun Collection you're guaranteed to get what you book, it says so on their site. Fantastic car I have to say, I was prepared to be underwhelmed, but I just wasn't. The Corvette gets too much stick over here, but it's an excellent car. Granted it might not be great on Irish roads with bumps, but I was on smooth American asphalt, and the only problem I had was not enough corners! Great fun blasting away from toll booths with the butterfly valves in the exhaust wide open!
    Would definitely recommend!

You would want to try driving in California then - some of the roads are in very poor condition, especially around LA. I actually had to stop and get out at one stage to see if I had a puncture but it was just the road!

Agree'd, even the older concrete freeways can be very bad.

New york city take the title though, driving around it make EVERY road in Ireland look as smooth as a runway:eek:

I guess Miami and Orlando were fine alright! Still, I'd have put up with some fairly rough roads!

Ya, I'm glad I capitalised at the time on being just the two of us. I was worried for weeks about our luggage not fitting, we had all 3 suitcases that you get in a set where there is one massive one, one medium and one carry-on size one. But they all went in no problem. I was also surprised at the amount of looks it got, I thought they'd be common as muck over there because they're so cheap to buy, but obviously Yanks go large when buying for themselves. I'd have a 'Vette if I lived over there anyway!

It's 10 years since I've driven in NYC so can't remeber too much about the road conditions. Roads in Nevada were pretty good, Arizona very good but once you cross that border in to CA you know all about it! That said I drove the PCH all they way to San Fran from LA and it was in relatively good condition with lots of twisties!

Word of advice for anyone thinking of doing the PCH in the future is to drive it North > South as much easier for stopping off at scenic points and the camera holder in the passenger seat doesn't get your mug in half the shots! ;)

True, I drove up to San Francisco on 101 and then back on the PCH, epic.

I've driven as many sections of original Route 66 as I could to but the wife gets bored so doing the whole lot will be a life box tick that she might have to left out of:P

The charger is a grand bus to be fair. Not bad when things get twisty either! Drove on from Las Vegas to Yosemite National park(Nevada Desert!) and then on to San Fran last summer. Was a blast.

You think? I had the standard rental spec one for a few days and hated it. It was the basic 2.7 V6 and it was almost dangerous entering freeways on the notoriously short US on ramps. 10 year old Korean spec interior and a massive steering wheel.

Imo the 300c(although the same car underneath) is a much better feeling car, especially in touring spec(3.5 v6) and only slightly more expensive to rent then the charger.

Id agree with that, I almost drove mine into the concrete off ramp coming out of the airport.

For a second I thought the steering wheel wasnt connected to anything! And dont get me started on the brakes, hanging my coat out the window would have been more effective at slowing the car down.

To make matters worse, I had to repair the one I got myself:eek: I realised the first night that the tail light and brake lights on one side weren't working. She wanted to go to a walmart so while there I bought some bulbs....they didn't work either, ended up tracing the wires, then going back into walmart to buy insulating tape......needless to say she was not impressed that on our few days away I still ended up in a carpark repairing a car.

Then the next day on the freeway, the front windscreen rubber surround came off and started flapping around......que another car park.....more repairs(with the remainder of the insulating tape).....and one very grumpy face in the passanger seat.:P

    Fixing a rental, nah!

You missed out. Any and all issues straight back to the company you rented from, if possible a local one not major airport, and complain. They'll swap the car out and maybe upgrade. If you don't feel safe driving it call them and get a car sent to where your staying.

I didn't miss out on anything. I wouldn't be arsed sitting around waiting for a rental company to come a sort out something so minor or wasting my time driving back to a rental office. I only had the car for 3 days. I told them about the window rubber alright, didn't even bother mentioning the lights.

I've changed bulbs in a couple of rentals before as well as had punctures repaired, I often have a car for 3 or 4 weeks and if something minor went wrong that I could fix for a couple of dollars then I wouldn't think anything of it.

You may not be bothered but having a broken or illegal rental looks bad on the company so they'll sometimes upgrade as compensation.

But I suppose most of the issues I've had where bigger than blown bulbs. Though I don't think I've ever thought to check the lights before leaving the yard, one more item in the check list, as I assumed that would be something the cleaner/maintenance person should do.

Well I've been lucky enough never to have a breakdown in a rental. That would certainly be a different story to some dodgy bulbs. A flat tyre in a hummer in the middle of the desert was a bit inconvenient to say the least though....although I certainly couldn't have called the rental company for that as I'm not sure they would be happy with how far from a road I was.:P

Any tips for a different city drop off? They are crazy money. Want to pick up in nashville and drive to Philadelphia but its coming in at €700 for 4 days! Doing a round trip isnt really an option.

I picked up the charger in Vegas and dropped it off in San Fran, there was no additional charge as far as I recall. There was a charge for being under 25 tho:mad:

I find carhire3000.ie very cheap. There rentals usually come with
    Your Rental Includes
    * Unlimited Kilometres for ALL car groups

    * Insurance ( - Collision Damage Waiver - Theft Protection - 3rd Party Liability - Supplementary Liability Insurance - Uninsured Motorist Protection )
    * Local Taxes
    * Airport Surcharge
    * Premium location fee
    * Homeland Security Fee

I did use Hertz before, and it was grand, a little bit more expensive but included all the cover you need. Before that, Budget car hire screwed us on cover (due to us been inexperienced at renting cars)

Any one know good place to hire a car in Chicago? Going there late March. Looking to hire a car at O'Hare airport and drop off in city centre 5 days later. Looking at Avis at the moment. A previous poster mentioned double checking insurance details when travelling to a different state (we're travelling to Indiana) - anyone got experience of that?

give carhire3000.ie ago, also look at autoeurope.ie and www.novacarhire.com.

These usually include cover in your price.

Budget are pretty good, it is more expensive to pick up at airport, the one by my house is like 15 dollars cheaper per day for a ford focus.. I'd recommend getting a car in the city, train is 40 mins only costs 2.25!

As for crossing state lines I've never heard that :/ we rented a car last weekend to go skiing in Wisconsin. It's not like you're crossing international borders its like going across a county border in Ire 'Welcome to Kerry' sign!

Do people generally get the international diving license? Were you ever asked for it?

I have gotten it 3 times, twice it costs €5 incl. postage, now it costs €15 and postage is €5. That's some increase.

Out of the 3 times I drove there, I was only asked for it once, but they didn't look in it, just asked if I had it!!

    Scam.

I've had my Irish license accepted at several US/Canada rental desks. I expect if I showed them an 'international license' I'd immediately be asked for my real one. Your Irish/EU license is translated into enough languages to be valid pretty much anywhere I'd imagine.

It wouldn't ever occur to me to get an international license. It's up there with traveller's cheques on the 'stuff you should definitely do going travelling'

Irish license is fine for the US and canada, I've driven regularly in both.
