    Hey,

I'm moving to Perth soon, I see cars are far more expensive in Australia than in Ireland, the Australian book value is about 75% more than the Irish book value of my car.

Has anybody imported a car to Australia? is it worth the hazel?

i would also like to know the in and outs of importing to oz

i was told that if you import a car to oz you have to keep it for a full year before you can sell it

unless your friendly with a car dealer

I was thinking more before oz if you need to own it in Ireland for a period of time, I presume you must or otherwise all Australians would be importing cars like this.
I know if importing a car from UK to Ireland to avoid paying VRT you must have owned car in UK for at least a year I think could be longer.

Having paid for shipping(€2000 approx), import duty, and "luxury" car tax(if applicable), you might end up "cost neutral" on the exercise, if you sell the car in Australia.

I should add...if your car has air con, you either need to get a license(400 AUS Dollars) to import the gas in the system...or alternatively degas the system, supply the evidence(the printout from the machine plus the signature of the mechanic on the Environment Department document), and then regas the system in OZ, if desired(in Australia...VERY much desired!).

from reading the other tread, it seems to say that you have to pay an import duty no matter what, only exception being to get a refund if you remove car after you leave Australia.

If this is the case it's no more of an advantage for me to import my car than it would be for an Australian citizen to source a car in another country and import, after all the costs involved you are not much if anything better off.

Unless someone out there who maybe did and can say something different?
