Wooohooo, now I can still cower in fear in my wardrobe secure in the knowledge that I could kill the drug crazed maniacal burglar downstairs if I wanted too.

With that softcock attitude I suspect you spend much of your life doing that.

I wasn't waiting for Alan Shatter to give me permission to defend my family and home from intruders.

    I don't think anyone was.

But at least now you don't have to worry about the aftermath.

Will this reasonable force allow home owners to get firearms for home defense.. People who own guns have an unfair advantage for defense if they can use them..
I'm getting a 12 gauge soon, but love to declare my true intentions for use..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 94 ✭✭quinnie123ie

I think reasonable force = not beating them to a pulp, pretty much only doing what is necessary to detain or remove them... personally i think you should have full rights to do whatever you please if you are protecting your castle and family within...

(i have personal experience of trying to protect my home and got charged and convicted for dislocating one of the potential intruders noses in my driveway)

can anyone please give a proper definition of "reasonable force" from a legal view point????

This was posted on one of the regional boards I read aswell.

Peoples reactions to it are hilarious, rejoicing as if it's going to affect their day to day life. Almost willing their house to be broken into so they can unleash their own brand of justice.

I wonder what they'd actually do if confronted with a burglar.

If you have a legally registered shot gun and someone breaks in to your house and is threatening your life then it's cool to shoot them, and now it's legal too!

You need to remember a burglar is going to be equipt with at least a screw driver or a crow bar of sorts, and will also be full of adrenolin from the fear of getting caught... i also heard a new tactic is that they boil the kettle and leave it at the bottom of the stairs in case anyone comes down... i think guns are a bit extreme, but we should be allowed go beyond reasonable force... I might get a crossbow the next time i am abroad :D

Lots of misinformation going on both here and in the media in general, if you want some sensible advice on why this legislation makes little difference in reality and may actually be more restrictive, a good interview with a Senior Council on the radio yesterday

Excellent, just placed an order for a mace and a samuri sword.
Looking forward to the legalised murder.

Now, just looking out my curtains here for a sales caller.

I agree. Once that the use of force is clearly propagated throughout the nation:eek:

Fortunately, what you think doesn't really matter.

To be honest, we did previously as there is a ruling that already touches upon this area: http://www.courts.ie/Judgments.nsf/23fd4a34bad801d980256ec50047a0a8/aded5c6b04f391478025725d00516c14?OpenDocument

regardless of the law if anyone broke into me house I'd murder them & then bury them in the mountains ( after pi$$ing on their corpses first )

Does anyone know if this "obligation to retreat if possible" bullcrap has been taken out ?

I don't think I'd be worrying about the finer points of the law in the event of being confronted by a burglar, I'd be figuring out if he/I were better armed, and if I could take him or not.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,846 ✭✭✭Fromthetrees

I think I'd just want the bad man to go away if I was on my own.
My daughter sleeps with me though and if I thought she was in danger even for a second I would try to kill the intruder, I don't care what the law says now or before or in the future, if my girls in trouble he's getting the claw hammer until he isn't moving, I keep it in my wardrobe.

It was never there to begin with. This law is really political show boating, it just codifies already extant common law. At least, I guess, it rectifies some misconceptions.

    NTM

Am I allowed to chop their thieving fingers off?
Then I"ll stick a chopped off digit in each nostril, each ear and a thumb up the bum.

    Let the burgling commence!!!

...as long as its "reasonable force"...I believe the answer is yes....
