Dodging paying your CORRECT rate of tax is illegal and asking how is against the rules of this forum.

Commercial tax is a discounted tax for commercial vehicles undertaking commercial work ONLY

Man up and pay what you should be paying like the rest of us.

    Edit:

From here; Sprinter CO2 chart it does not show the year, but they are all 200g/co2 plus, so if you can prove its between 191-225, you pay €1129, if its >226, its €2258

BUT, if it was first registered in the first 6 months of 2008,
you can pay the cc rate of €885 (assuming its the 2.2)

Private tax on ALL commercial vehicles is based on engine CC, regardless of when it was registered.

Mullingar...I didn't ask for any negative feedback so if you have nothing good to say don't say it. Don't worry about me paying my tax i have a car and its all perfectly legal, i wanted a van for gardening work i do outside the hours of my normal job! That is all :)

Well, unless you meet a fool in the council tax office(possible:)), you will have to provide evidence of your business use for a van that big. That evidence could be anything from a vat no to a business card or headed paper.

Sounds like business use to me. Id push to tax commercially if I was you. Technically everyone works and runs a business anyway some get paid well and some in kind !

Not necessarily, if his turnover is less than €37500 a year in the case of persons supplying services he has no obligation to register for vat

He will need to get the form stamped in a Garda station if he is taxing it for the first time.
