    Hey all,
Have an msi gt725 laptop. The power jack became loose a couple of months ago so I contacted a local repair guy.

He soldered the jack and all was well, until it broke again!! It would charge if i held the cable in i certain way. Tried the guy again but mysteriously he wouldnt answer my calls.

Last night it finally crapped out, a few crackles a burning smell and then smoke!

Can someone please recommend somewhere I can send it off to so the jack can be properly replaced??

    Thanks

    John

What else do you think is wrong?

Well, if you're getting a burning smell and smoke then you have a pretty serious, if not fatal problem with the laptop.

I had a similar laptop issue a few months back.. One of the two wires to the power jack had come off and it wouldnt charge.. Again, if you push the cable in a certain way, it would light up, but as soon as you released the pressure, it would stop charging again.. I resoldered the joint and it worked fine then...

I would say that the guy didnt put a good connection on it... There may be other issues resulting from this but the crux of the issue seems to be that you asked him to repair the power jack joint and he didnt do this properly.

    Burning Smell = burnt components

Sounds like there was a short in your power connection. Depending on how good the isolation circuitry is, you could have from one to many components destroyed. Remember that laptops aren't designed to short like this, so the chances are there's more than one component destroyed. If any of these components are on the motherboard, you will be very lucky to ever get it working again.

The burning smell could be the plastics on the dc jack itself rather than a component on the boards - this is quite common. I wouldn't freak out just yet.

OP I suggest that you bring the laptop back to the person who originally soldered it if you can get in touch with. They should stand over the job.

    Best of luck.
