Hen Party - Westport

    Hi there,

I'm in the process of planning my lovely sister's hen party for June 2012. So far I've settled on Westport as the destination and while the hotels are lovely we are looking for something a little cheaper. I've contacted the Harbour Mill Apartments. They got back to me very quick and are very reasonably priced. The only thing turning me off them is the €50 deposit from every guest for noise/damage. The group going on the hen are not rowdy but I'm sure there will be the odd bit of noise as we come home/leave to hit the town so I'm terrified the money would be kept on each guest. Has anybody ever stayed there before or know of any other self catering options in Westport?
I've tried the Atlantic Coast Holiday Homes but they are already booked up. Looking into a place called 'The Helm' at the moment???

Also if anyone's got any ideas of activities in the area that would be great!

    Thanks,

    ShindyB

beach walks? beauty treatments? mountain biking? art/craft galleries? trad music? bar hopping? it's hard to give recommendations on activities without a hint as to what ye'd be into.

if there's foodies amongst the party and dining out is yer thing i'd highly recommend An Port Mór for dinner one night. gorgeous local/in season food and they have a private dining room next to the main restaurant that you can book in advance and be by yerselves.

ye'll have a ball anyway, westport is lovely. :)

    Hi Shindy,

For accommodation, you could try MJ Henehans. It is a guest house which is over a pub in the town called Henehans. This is in the middle of the town compared to The Helm which is out on the quays and while it is a nice part of Westport, it is a fair distance to the main part of the town.

Henehans is also a late bar which is good but might be a bit noisy.

For things to do, there is the greenway which you can cycle on to Achill. This might be too much to do for a hens but there are a few hotels in the town who will organise a cocktail class for hens and parties. I know that Hotel Westport definitely do this.

Thanks for the replies guys! I've looked into Henehans and The Helm so gonna go with one of them I think. Any opinions on Sage or Sol Rio restaurants?

i've found sol rio to be very hit and miss and tbh that kinda put me off the place. not sure if that's because of the chef had changed or there was a different one working or whatever, or because on the nights the place was 'off' they were full.

Have you tried the Mill Times Hotel? It's fairly central and you could get a bed/breakie/dinner deal. The food in the restaurant is nice.

There are loads of places to stay and eat in Westport and it's hen and stag friendly. If you check out the first few pages in the Mayo forum you will get some more ideas. The Helm is a nice spot but if you stay out the quays it will mean getting taxis in and out of town. (thinking high heels!)

Westport is Lovely! But Henehans i would image would be noisy to be staying above!
As i have been out there a few times and it does be pretty jammers and loud! Kind of a disco bar like!

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Henehans said their guesthouse is now closed and the Mill Times didn't have anything available for the weekend we're going. Everyone I talked to was so nice though - very friendly place altogether by the looks of it.
We've now booked accommodation in The Helm so now on to the activity.
The bride to be is quite active and up for anything really. Heard some stuff about pony trekking on the beach or sea kayaking? Anyone done either of these in Westport that could recommend any suppliers?

Thanks and keep the advice coming!

sea kayaking - they do a free shuttle bus from westport too, might be handier than everyone sharing lifts?

    pony trekking

there's guys out at bertra beach that do windsurfing/surfing lessons too but i can't remember their business name. bertra is worth a visit anyway - great for a long walk to blow off the cobwebs/hangover ;)

    Hi ShindyB,
I am also looking into Westport for my sisters hen party in June 2012.
How did you get on with planning it? I cant seem to find much on it and don't know what the atmosphere will be like or if it will be quiet, We are hoping to go the first weekend in June (bank holiday weekend) so there will probably be a lot of places booked at this stage I would imagine!

Just FYI, I had my stag in Westport and booked two units at the Harbour Mill, found it perfect. I was also a little wary about the policy on noise and such, but it was fine when we got down there so I would definitely recommend it.

@pinksparkle, Westport on a bank holiday weekend will be anything but quiet...

Hey there! I got on great in the end. Booked accommodation in The Helm - B & B for €35 pp/night so not too shabby at all! Activity wise we are going to do zorbing and zipwiring in Westport House. I have to say everyone I've spoken to has been so helpful and friendly. Also, it will be anything but quiet, particularly for a BH weekend! Check out www.destinationwestport.com to get you started! After that, I asked for advice from the person I booked the accommodation with and he gave me all the help I needed! Happy planning and thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions on boards. I'll let ye all know how it goes! Roll on June 8th!
