    Hi

Just wondering if it's possible to apply for deposit assistance?

The gentleman who works in my local social welfare office suggested I look into it as it's my first time seeking rent allowance/accomodation and I should be entitled to something.

    Any help greatly appreciated :)

No. The gentleman should know well that you're entitled to nothing. You're not even entitled to the full rent demanded by the landlord.

You can apply for it. It is up to the discretion of the DSP reprsentative/Community Welfare Officer who considers your application whether he will pay it. You should explain your full circumstances and why you are unable to afford this. You stand a better chance if you can get some of the deposit together yourself. The one thing that CWOs hate more than anything is people demanding or considering that they are ENTITLED to anything. If you go in and show that you're able to meet them half way, they are much more amenable to making a payment.

    Adh mor!

It certainly has been possible to get discretionary assistance with deposits in the past.

However, you should go to your local council and enquire about the Rented Accomodation Scheme, as they will take care of the deposits, etc for you.

I would have thought that as you need to be renting for 6 months prior to receiving rent allowance that it could be difficult to get, unless you have extenuating circumstances

That's a point Susie...not sure how that plays with the Rented Accommodation Scheme though...can't hurt to ask.

Also, Kildare, Wicklow and most of Dublin are now under the Central Rents Unit not the CWOs.

This is a recent list of the Dublin areas covered:
