Yep they are of the period and same on the front except white background , iirc you can have black also background instead of the red, I also remember black with silver lettering front and back being popular at the time but I can't say if that's legal or not

Had a look at the link , I like the gold line plates they sell , I remember them back in the day and didn't think you could still get them. Thanks for the info.

Sorry to thread hijack a little but does anyone know if the gold line plates would be legal front and back in black on a 1989 car.

red would be OK but you'd need the proper raised letter plates or it will look awful

Id go for silver on black personally, (but not with the modern font as you see some cars and definately not with the numerals offset towards the bottom as some people do ,having used the machine that makes modern plates which leave room for the County name.

I'd just get a Euro plate.

Why even try to display a new super-long-serial-county-format on a period plate?

Heres pictures of the front and rear plates of my Datsun 100a with red and white plates. Might help you decide?

they look great but thats because the number is in the right format (or something close to it)

Doesn't the Renault 5 have indentations for oblong plates, will all those numbers and spaces fit on a raised letter oblong plate?

I'd go for black oblong with small pressed silver digits, french style,it is a french car after all.

As car is blue, I think I'll got for the silver on black raised digits.

You will have fun spacing that plate with proper sized raised digits and make it look authentic.
The fact that you have two #1s makes it a bit easier, but it will still look very crowded. The mock up plate that that website uses makes it look better than it is in actuality.

This is where the issue with ridiculous sized numbers for older cars really shows up.:(

Macplaxton is the man with the fine detail regarding fonts and spacing. Im sure he will set us straight.:)

Well part of the reason I gave my answer further up is a "new" county format doesn't have the old style plate concession. Only original format and ZV does.

Just stick any old plate on it until next year when presumably you can chop it in for a ZV. Then you only have to worry about fitting 7 characters instead of 8/9. It'll possible to make a compliant one even 7 characters, it just needs a slightly longer plate...unless you can get a serial with at least a couple of 1's in it.

I do have to throw my hands up now and say the registration plate system here has gone from bad to worse and is a whole load of bollocks.

i think that anything was legal on a car registered before 1989 and is a grey area for imports from the same period. ;)

Hmm! I've euro plates on the mini (1980) and it just looks strange. Those other ones would look a lot better on it.

I've given up trying to make presentable plates now...

    This new system is terrible.

OP ordered plates off me today in the plastic rivited digits but they are not going to fit with a 9 digit number.

Will have to do pressed metal plates to get the 83 MH 15001 to fit.

I agree with getting a ZV plate next year when the car will be 30 years old.

Yes. You can have red and white plates on a pre 87 car and whites on a pre 91.

    Told ye.
Pressed metal will still look outta place because the font size won't look right.

Remember you can't make a silk purse from a pigs ear..

Our plastic rivited digit plates are 78.90 euro inc vat and delivery if that is what you mean?

Pressed metal versions with correct sized digits are 35.90 euro delivered.

Very lucky, it wouldn't fit otherwise. Still looks appalling with all the crammed in numbers and letters.

    **** sake.

Well we could do it with small euro fonts and it would look all wrong.

I'd advise the OP to go for a ZV next year when his 5 is 30 years old.

Thanks. Looks fine to me. Looks kinda french!

With any other number in that series that doesnt have two #1s in it you will have to.

are there really 15,001 cars in meath beginning with 83? seems a huge number or is that just an example. I saw a 97 C 40002 car...now there is something wrong there with the plate or he/she is dodging speed cameras..

Have you been napping? :D The Revenue Commissioners played around with the numbers back at the start of December.

Probably worth checking out these two threads and come back (preferably outraged) when you're up to speed...;)

I thought you were a regular on here G Luxel! :cool:If you live in Dublin you get XXD120000 and upwards.
Wonder will anyone get pulled by puzzled and uninformed policemen?
