Depending on your circumstances a partial refund may be possible.

See the guide to the USC on the Revenue website. It is based on your earnings not your circumstances. If under 4004 Euro you should not have been charged but over 4004 euro it was due at 2%.

revenue dont seem to state anywhere on the site how to go about claiming a refund. They stated earlier in 2011 that you would be able to claim refunds online, doesnt seem to have happened though

In the FAQS section 2.24, it says contact Revenue for a review of your USC. There is no point doing that though without your employer, former employer or pension provider filing their end of year P35 with Revenue. This supposed to be done by mid February but can be later than that sometimes.

This is basically what I had to do only I got my USC Cert with my P45 because I lost my job in March 2011. I had paid USC at 7% for the months I had worked and then had been unemployed for the remainder of 2011. I sent off all my documentation and requested a review about 2 weeks ago so I am awaiting a reply.

Anyone know about the rate bands for the USC, to my knowledge it's 2% for first 10036, than 4% for next 6k approx and then 7% for everything after 16k approx.

If you are joint assesed with a partner do the bands as above get shared or are both people entitled to the first 10036 at 2% and so on?

All answers available on the Revenue website. Check out the FAQs, Page 21 specifically.
