    Google Android

Has the best saving & highest user rating I can find.

That Tablet has a Resistive screen, would be better getting one with a capactive screen.

If you need one right now take a look at the mid range Archos tablets in Powercity. Go for the newer G9 over the 101, as the G9 should get an update to Ice Cream Sandwich / Android 4.

Or wait a few months for the newer tablets due out with Android 4.

How about to get an Amazon Kindle Fire, after read this comparison "Kindle Fire VS Nook Tablet Specs", I bought a kindle Fire this holiday.
But this all depends on the needs, what would you expect the tablet use for with your son?

Thanks Bellu, he'll be using it for fun (surfing, movies, games) and hopefully for school as well. I see that some tablets have front facing cameras, this would be useful if using Skype ;)

If you want to use skype be aware that most cheap tablets will not support it. The Flytouch will not, in any case. For under 200 the options with capacitive screens are limited but I would be tempted to take a punt on the Ainol Novo 7 if I were in your situation and I could get my hands on one.

On the other hand, there's no substitute for picking one up and testing it, no number of reviews will give you a full idea of just what a tablet is like to use. I heard something about Tesco selling some sub-200 euro tablets recently so they might be worth checking out.

I don't know what age your son is but I'm struggling to see any school-related applications of a tablet. Others may disagree.

Thanks Pickarooney - Ainol Novo 7 looks really good - definitely worth considering. I am in no hurry as my sons birthday is in two months, so plenty of time to do my homework. I am not looking for 'school applications' its more to use the tablet as a research tool to look up things and to learn the ways of using internet.

I'd go for the Archos over the Tesco one, the Yarik doesn't really get good reviews.

The Archos also has Bluetooth, which many of the Chinese manufacturers appear to omit from their tablets. So you could potentially control everything using Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, including surfing the intent on the TV. So in effect the Tablet can transform your TV into a Smart TV; yet you also benefit from having the Tablet.

The Ainol Tablet comes with a remote control which you can use to play, pause etc movies, but its no where as flexible as having a mouse/keyboard.

BTW, the Archos will officially be receiving Android 4 in February.

Yep. Its a good middle ground Tablet, and powercity have it at a good price for a bricks and mortar store.

    Peats might have it also.

    It does nearly everything.

Android honeycomb. Micro sd expansion, most video will play , good size screen, fairly responsive. Good solid wifi connection. Reasonably decent looking screen.
Plent of firmware updates from Archos(for now)

Not the greatest device out there , but for 235euro you cant go wrong.

What do you all think of the playbook? Was gonna ask for a tablet around the 200 mark and thought someone would mention it. 220 in PCWorld

    Its not android.
    No market means no apps

yes, have front facing cameras, that would be cool to use Skype.
I agreed with Pickarooney, the Ainol Novo 7 seems not bad.
All in all, all depends on the needs, and if there are nearly two month away your son's birthday, think you could do much homework before deciding, and maybe after two month some of them are on discount :D

I had a look at this one (Archos 80 G9) in Powercity - looks great, and for EUR235, not bad. There are now faster versions out, but in Powercity they did not know when they will get them

Hi Thomasofmel - I'm looking for one for my daughter and wondered if you'd chosen any particular tablet yet?

I saw this one on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B006M07X34 and thought it sounded OK - would appreciate any views on it.

Hi, my son decided that he wanted Samsung Galaxy Mini phone instead :o so will leave the tablet for now - I probably would have gone with the Archos one, but your tablet on Amazon does not look bad either - I would go with 8" size though, the 7" is quite small and 10" seems a bit large for a kid.

Glad you have that sorted lol.
I did some digging around and after chatting with the guys on the bargains alert forum I found the Ainol Novo 7 Elf which looks pretty good too.

Samsung, nexus or prestigo something like that be best buys as an android tablet. Check out harvey norman, soundstore or pc world when they have good deals on!

Yeah they look good alright. Another getting good review is this iPad mini replica for less than 140 V88

Benchmarks its about on Par with the HTC One which is crazy for 130.
