Information on redundancy

A friend of mine has been told that they are currently at risk of being made redundant. They is to be a meeting in the very near future with the company's offer etc. They person over 7 years continuous service and have been advised that they are being made redundant due to advances in technology and their position being made redundant.

The company advised that there may be a part time role in place but nothing concrete. Can they choose to hire a new employee, if statutory redundancy is taken, to do the job they were doing doing but on a part time basis?

They are of the view that the company is just looking to get someone in on a lower wage structure and have them on a fixed contract.

What options are available to them?
