    Hi All

I'm just car researching at the moment and was wondering what are these like? Looking at circa 2007.

The car is for someone whose main criteria are reliably and fuel economy.
Could anyone advise what they are like on petrol ? (will be used mainly in city)

Were these cars all Jap imports or was the auto option available to the Irish buyer.

    Thanks

Auto option available here, 4 speed though, very unresponsive in manual mode. Hard enough on juice

Mostly available in Luna spec, but they made a few aura (base spec) particularly in 06 for some reason. A good few auras were rental cars.

You could do worse, but I hated the gearbox.

Thanks Colm , trying to find a decent automatic is hard work. The choice seems to be very limited.

Is the 1.8 the same as that was in the Celica?

Do you have any idea how they fair against the manual for fuel economy? I'm finding it hard to get details of MPG return for this model.

Somewhat the same, it's 128hp, the celica is 140. The engine that earned a rep for oil consumption in he early to mid noughties

All jokes aside, have you considered a civic ima or Prius?

Manual 1.8s are heavy on juice if you go over 100 km/h.

Not as bad as the 1.6 though.

Just had a look at some civics on carzone - they look quite well. Would they be a better option? What advantaged do they have over the Toyota.

I also had a look at the Prius online (I thought they were far more expensive than they actually are)

I'm just afraid my mechanic would not go near it and it could prove really expensive if something went wrong.

Indeed they're not, the gearing on the 1.6s is ridiculous, 3600 at a speedo indicated 120 kph and nearly 3800 at an actual 120 kph! A 1.6 is painful on a motorway for this very reason. The 1.8s aren't the best all the same though for fuel economy at higher speeds.

The Civic is 1.4 tax and much better on fuel. also less common and nicer inside, usually have leather and cruise.

Definitely an interesting alternative ;) - I'm just afraid if something went wrong it could be a very specialised job for someone to try and fix.

Meh, not really. apparently even if the battery goes tits up the car will still work fine. It's a different type of hybrid system to the prius.

It's a Honda though, so it won't go wrong (especially as the hybrids are Jap built)!

Hybrids are extremely reliable, in stark contrast to modern diesels, you'll note!
