Production on the feature film adaptation of 24 is scheduled to begin this Spring :D

    http://www.rte.ie/ten/2012/0109/24.html
24 star Kiefer Sutherland has said the plan is to shoot the movie of the series "at the end of April, beginning of May".

While speaking to reporters about his new show Touch at the Television Critics Association winter tour in the US, Sutherland also said that the timeline for the movie's plot would be "relatively a direct continuation" of the final episode of the series.

"We're talking maybe six months from the end of that episode," he said.

Sutherland confirmed that that the film, like the series, would focus on a 24-hour period.

Was beginning to wonder if the film would ever happen but it now looks as if its definitely going ahead, with a 2013 release most likely!

I hope this is good but not sure how the 24 format will transfer to a 2 hour running time. I love the show but I always thought 24 episodes was a bit too much, and the season certainly lagged a bit with plenty of unnecessary storylines used to pad it out. I always thought it could be condensed to 12 hours easily, with each episode spanning 2 hours of real time. That would allow you to skip the bits where they're driving places, etc. and focus on the main storylines with a few subplots thrown in.

But by condensing it to 2 hours I think it will just become a bit like the Bourne films or just another generic action movie. There won't be much time to develop the plot, the world it takes place in or the supporting characters compared to the show.

With that being said however Jack Bauer is a great character and already fully developed for any fans of the show. The challenge will be introducing him to new fans in a short space of time.

If they can keep the plot relatively simple it could work. E.g. a terrorist is planning something, possibly somewhere outside of the US. A black-ops mission is needed to track him and take him out, and Jack is chosen as the only suitable agent unaffiliated to the US to lead this mission in return for a pardon and an end to his life on the run.

Right there for new fans you have back story that he is an exceptional agent but has been on the run for something in the past. There is an immediate threat that gets the film off and running. And as usual there will be some 24-style twists, double agents, etc. to keep the audience guessing! :D

But it will have to be treated as a film, rather than an adaptation of the tv series, to work. Use the characters and use the style of the show but forget the countdown clocks and keep the pacing constant throughout.

I'm in two minds about the movie. Obviously, more Bauer is good, but I kinda liked the way they finished up the last season! Kiefer constantly suggested that he wanted Jack to be killed off when we needed him most. Hopefully, if he dies in the movie, it'll be done well and not just for shock value.

I know they haven't started production yet but surely they will be eyeing the potential of sequels if the film does well at the box office.

Isn't this the kind of stuff that never really gets a cinema release and disappears onto DVD only to have people ask years later 'What! There was a film?" ......just wondering, I am a fan of the first few series of 24.

Just heard Kiefer on the radio talking about it. Sounds like Die Hard with Jack Bauer.

I learned something new about Chloe today (not having seen 24 on Blu-ray).

It is later revealed on the epilogue, featured only on the Blu-ray release of Season 8, that Chloe was arrested at her apartment by the FBI, in front of Morris and her son, for aiding Jack Bauer. She faces a fifteen year prison sentence.

that was the original concept apparently but that script was rejected. I think they want it set in europe so bauer can travel from country to country within the 24 hours

24 Movie Update: How Much Time Will Have Passed? Who's In It?

As for which familiar faces will take part in the project beyond Sutherland himself, 24 series/film producer Howard Gordon told TV Guide Magazine this week that Mary Lynn Rajskub’s Chloe, for one, will be involved.

Sounds fantastic! Although i thought their tv-movie was just alright, nothing spectacular. I'll definitely go see this, why not. I wonder how a film set over a day will be condensed and how they introduce the characters to a new audience.
