3 Month Holiday Visa - The Facts

    Hello.....this comes up very often.

Irish passport holders can avail of the ETA (electronic travel authority) visa which allows a visit of up to 3 months. This visa is designed for people who wish to visit Australia for the purpose of holidaying.

Due to the economic situation in Ireland many are naturally looking at ways of securing employment and/or sponsorship with Australian Companies.

    The facts are

    - people do enter Australia on the ETA visa to attend job interviews
    - people do enter Australian on the ETA to approach prospective employers
    - when in Australia you can lodge a sponsorship or spouse (and other visas but these are the most common with irish people) visa application while holding a ETA visa
    - you can be issued with a bridging visa if you apply for a suitable visa (such as a sponsorship or spouse visa) while on the ETA visa
    - applicants here are advised by some employment agencies or visa companies that this is the way to enter Australia

    HOWEVER

    - the main conditions of an ETA visa are that you must not engage in work and that your intention is to visit Australia temporarily for tourism purposes

THEREFORE if questioned at Immigration clearance and it is found that you are entering Australia for purposes other than tourism your ETA can be cancelled and you will be refused entry. A 3 year exclusion period may then apply (which may be waived on applying for permanent visas)

These are facts and with the volume of irish people entering Australia the officials in Australia are aware of the misuse of the ETA and Irish people are being refused entry.

It's simply not easy for most people to get into Australia but then maybe this is one of the reasons why the Australian economy continues to be stable.

Have seen a lot of posts as of late on other websites/forums confirming that DIAC are refusing at the border more often, obviously the economic downturn in UK and especially Ireland plus reports in Irish Echo that Irish overstayers are up 24% that they view people are willing to go illegal are making DIAC more suspicious.
