Psychology is my passion and I want to study it absolutely but I didn't get the points needed for the "pure" psychology course. (500-520)
I got 380 and I could apply this year for an Arts degree in Maynooth which would consist of me Studying Psychology with 2 other subjects for a year, then in 2nd and 3rd year studying psychology by itself.

What is the difference in doing psychology in this Arts way compare to the pure psychology course? Am I learning less? Is the qualification different and in what ways? Can I still do a masters???

A lot of bad stigma is misted around Arts degrees and I want to find out the truth of the matter!!

Please help!!! I need to apply to CAO soon!!!!

With Psychology through arts you do Psychology in first year as an arts subject and the transfer into the pure Psychology degree for second and third year assuming that you get the necessary grades. Your degree will then be exactly the same as people who started in the pure psychology course. In fact even in first year you will be doing the exact same course as them

Afaik the grades are currently 60% and you need to be in the top 25 in the class.

    I'm doing Psychology through Arts.

What I would say is this, there is some boring material in first year - statistics.

I've done one statistics module this semester, its very easy but very, very boring.

So if you're willing to put up with that module and do as well in it as you're other modules (which are not as bad imo) you will be fine.

If possible try and get the reference section for your continuous assessment absolutely correct. A lot of marks will go for this and it could save you.

I know others have found that quite a difficult module so I think that might be a bit much to call it easy

Are you in the second year of psychology now???
Was it not difficult to be in the top percentage of the class?? This is what worries me.

I would hate to apply, do the arts course with psychology and then not get into the 2nd year! I would be screwed!! The system is a f*ucking joke!

Remember that your class will be made up of Pure psychology students and arts students not interested in continuing psychology as well as those who will be like you. The competition won't be as big as you think it is :-)

Work hard and you will be fine :-)

As for the system, I'm not sure which one you are talking about but remember that everything needs a cut off point unfortunately!

It's there because if there were more students in 2nd and 3rd year the staff:student ratio would be too low for the degree to be accredited by the PSI. It's not their fault if you don't get the 60% etc. you need for second year.

No I'm in first year but from what I've heard the second semester modules are not that bad compared to the one module (statistics) you do for first year that isn't interesting.

For the statistics module I would recommend you make friends with a person doing the full BA in maths. I know a guy studying maths and that was a huge help in my statistics CA, I got an A in the assignment and thats 20% of my grade already. So if you do meet anyone who could tutor you with that module it will help in the long run.

Do you like biology? I think if you do you will find the other module I did this semster really interesting too. Its all about the nervous system and how the human brain operates. You learn about childhood developments such as social, cognition, language and emotional.

Psychology is very broad so depending on what you're interested in you may do very well in it. Don't worry about competition for 2nd year now, just think about what other subjects you would like to do with Psychology and make sure you know you will enjoy the other 2 subjects in second year if it doesn't work out.

And of course if you listen in lectures, do all the work and keep up revision in general you will have no problem getting into second year. There will be people there who don't want to get into second year also;).

    HI!
I'm a 3rd year psychology student, got in through arts. I didn't find it too hard, I wasn't getting all As or anything, I ended up with exactly 60% and that was without too much effort. I had kind of stopped trying by 2nd semester as I felt a bit dejected listening to all the other students boasting about how much work and study they were doing. I didn't work my ass off and I could have put in a lot more effort but I still ended up getting it, simply because I went to all my lectures and tutorials and kept up with my work. All those competitive people put me off but turns out you just need to be consistent rather than crazy! It is well worth it, and I firmly believe if you really want and deserve it you'll get it, without having to kill yourself working for it

There's the Maths Support Centre in Rye Hall too, if you have problems with any of the statistics stuff. You don't have to study maths to use it!

Karaokeman is right about picking two other subjects you like as well. One of my best friends came to NUIM definite on doing psychology, but it turned out that she actually didn't end up liking it so she kept on her two other subjects instead.

Woah! Thanks for all your help guys!

I did hear that their was a fair bit of maths involved in statistics and what not. I have a friend down there already that could help me with maths but it's absolutely great that their's a maths support centre! My maths is how you say "rusty" so the support centre sounds fantastic!!
My goodness, I'm seeing my old careers guidance teacher on Friday for a session to get my CAO things sorted.
    Maynooth here I come!

Nice!!! I hope I can be as fortunate as you!! I can sympathize with you on the efforts of other students boasting about how great they are with in tests and studying, **** the lot of them!
I have no problem studying psychology so I think I can be consistent with regards to the coursework and what have you.
Thank you so much for your reply, these boards are brilliant, I only joined recently!
