Options for replacing broken Sky box ?

    Hi.

Our Sky+ box is causing us significant trouble at the moment. Been found that it is faulty and is causing channels to jump.

After contacting sky, they said that they'd charge us €30 one off plus €12 extra per month in order to get a new Sky HD box.

Now, I'm just wondering is there a better way to work this. We currently have Sky World with all of the Sky Sports channels. I would like to get a HD Box in order to get the free HD Channels such as BBC and ITV HD. However, I have no interest in paying the extra charge to the other HD channels.

Would creating a new account with Sky by having sky installed under the name of another person living in the house be a cheaper way of getting a new HD box ?

Buy a s/h one on adverts for about €50, 10 mins to switch it over and another 10mins on the phone pairing the card with Sky, job done!

If you are out of contract (which I assume you are) then call them back and say you're paying full whack and that you can't use the service you're paying for. They'll give you the line that they only supply the channels but tell them you think this isn't acceptable and ask for cancellations.

At worst you'll get a free call out to have a look at the box and they'll more than likely replace the box (and dish if you push them) for nothing. Worked for us anyway.

Worked for me, too. New dish and new Sky HD box. Mind you, I wasn't joking when I asked for cancellations! (The only reason we're still with Sky is that the other Hillels want a simple solution. Two boxes simply don't hack it, for them.)
