    hey all,

happy new year. As Jan is here i was thinking it would be nice to start the new year by arranging a short trip. I am female, solo, 31, and visited quiet a lot of mainland europe already. I love the water, ski a bit... like the outdoors... I only have 4 days really... so a long weekend. Anybody been anywhere nice recently or done anything interesting?

Would love to hear some suggestions.

    Thanks in advance :D

In the winter? If you want a bit of sun, Barca and Lisbon are both great. Nice could also be a good choice - the beach will be a bit quiet but you can get a bus up into the mountains and go skiing for the day.

Barca came to mind, too, but Lisbon is also really excellent. Barcelona is a city that nearly has it all but the weather wouldn't be super-awesome around now. I would say Lisbon is much more pleasant.

I recently returned from Morocco (Tangier, Fes, Chefchaouen) via Malaga and Tarifa. It's a totally different kind of holiday to the one you're probably looking for, but it's not without its coastal pursuits and very interesting culture (it's also safe and people are very friendly).

So, if it's surfing you would like to do, there's no harm considering either Tarifa or Cadíz in southern Spain ... Cadíz is an old walled town on a peninsula jutting into the Atlantic, Tarifa similar but very small (and a real surfing Mecca). Getting there is easy: fly Aer Lingus to Malaga and get a bus to either from the central bus station. I just got back from Malaga (for the second time - one to get engaged in the Alhambra in Granada, one to start and end a honeymoon in Morocco) and find the city very nice - but forget all the horrible resorts like Fuengirola and Marbella.

Morroco is pretty amazing. Was there about 6 years ago, did a trip with a female friend. But we got quiet a bit of hassle at the markets and generally very stared out of it. But once in the counrty side it was fine. Done a lot of traveling is asia since then.. so wonder would I feel differently about it now.

Big fan of Portugal and Spain, been a while since I've been there, defo time for a return trip :)
