Changine my bangernomics tack

I dont know if you can really even call it bangernomic at all anymore, its more just a hunt for a cheap car.

For those of you following my focus story, i decided in the end to put it up for sale http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2868063 and have found a buyer at 1600 which i'm happy with.

so i have roughly 2500 tops to play with.
so i'm looking for something presentable, cheap to run and reliable. number plate not important but i would be reluctant to go back in the years and whatever i'm buying must be NCT'd.

what are the 1.2 polo/ ibizas like? would they be much less economical than the focus? everything considered here guys, so i'm looking for suggestions.

    was looking at these

edit : thread title should be tact not tack, oops!

I can't see going from the Focus to the Polo or Ibiza being a great move, both have lots of mileage

id go for a decent condition accord or a4 for that money, of course it's not going to be an 03 but still better choice than polo or ibiza

that was my reckoning on the ibiza, the best of it is probably gone.

the more i thought about it it was surely time to jump ship on the focus, tax, test, timing belt kit and whatnot would have added up to 500 and thats before any hidden NCT surprises.

i only paid 1500 for it so to get 1600 back was grand.

i just want to buy something decent enough quality given my budget that will be reliable and cheap as chips to run. and not a k11 or k12 micra or an e11 corolla of any sort, been there done that and lifes too short to drive the same car twice :P

could tidy up well, plently of cash left over should it fail the test?

did you not have a G6, what happened that?

Not on your nelly. 2 grand Audis are usually dung buckets. If they had any other badge on them they'd most likley be 5-600 quid. 2 and a half grand buys a lot of nice car these days.

i think we're speaking about two types of a4's, I'm still at 97-01 version

I think you're off your tree to be considering the likes of that for 500 miles a week.

Not after seeing that we're not. That yoke is exactly my point. A boggo 1.6, 6 month test glorified Skoda in flat red thats 12 years old ....for 1500 quid.

You see here's my point; for all intents and purposes, this is the same car...

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2840977

Year younger, less mileage, longer test, same engine, same dash, same swithgear , you could strap an Audi badge to it and most morons couldnt tell the difference. But its way cheaper and thats the point. 2k Audis are 800 quid cars with 1200 quid badges ;) Still wouldnt buy either for what its worth.

I am still at a loss to see why the OP changed from the Focus. Your circumstances are still the same i.e you need an economical, reliable car for 500 miles a week. You already had that with the Focus, I don't know why you changed. You may well end up with a lemon with your next purchase.

As for the timing belt and other parts, in order for a car to be reliable it has to be maintained properly. If the Focus seemed like a solid car I would have invested in it for the next year anyway.

Agreed. Going from a Focus to an Ibiza to save maybe €10 a week in fuel and tax is depressing. Jesus, I went from a 1L to a 1.8 and I was gasped at (IRL, not on Boards) and it's only costing me an extra €25 a week total on fuel, insurance and tax.

I don't think many small petrols will better the mpg that the Focus gave. Although €2500 will buy another nice diesel saloon to replace it :)

decided against the small petrol option, and i'm going to stay diesel.

as regards not keeping the focus, id rather sell it on and break even on it and use the money i would have spent on keeping it on the road on trading up instead. i just felt the itch to change, surely any motoring enthusiast can appreciate that. agreed though the new car could be a lemon, but sure thats just the risk you take.

i have arranged to view this http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/2852927 tomorrow.

anybody any words of wisdom on the vectras?
