Just wondering can I have peoples views on Saabs in general especially the newer models... good and bad points...seems to be a lot of car for the money.

The 9-3 was designed when Saab was owned by General Motors. The 9-3 mostly has the same running gear as the last Opel Vectra but there are still alot of parts that are not shared between both. The 1.9 Tid engine is a diesel engine that General Motors bought from Fiat.

There were 3 versions of this engine in the 9-3. The first was the 8 valve 120bhp version. Next one was the 16 valve 150bhp version and then the very rare (in Ireland anyway) was the twin turbo 190bhp version which had the TTiD badge. The 120bhp is probably the most reliable of the bunch.

Early models had a tendency to be poorly built, interior switchgear and trim look and feel cheap. I'd aim for a 2007 or later model if you can afford it as it got the revised dashboard with nicer switchgear that doesn't look like they were designed by Fisher Price.
