Just saw signs in the village for this, seems to be the first leisure event of the year round these parts. Raising money for Ratoath GAA so not a sportive as such.
I'm not involved in any way so for info see their website www.ratoathgaa.ie.
Anyone heading along or know any more?

    Is Ratoath GAA a charity?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 703 ✭✭✭happygoose

Its not. One can safely assume that the OP means a fundraiser. There's a thread on this 'fundraiser' already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭marketty

    Oops I did mean fundraiser!
Any chance of a title edit mods?

Might as well be considering the repayments they'll have on that clubhouse.

Decent club though doing good work. I have no affiliation with them btw. Just after some exams I'm doing so may give it a miss, just not getting the spins in.

Would have considered doing this as a long training spin as would many others but e40 is too steep.

I rode this route today in a light westerly wind. Most of it is flat with good road surface apart from a few craters shortly after turning off the N2. If you intend doing it unaided, the wind on the day will be more significant than the elevation as there are long straights especially from the N2 back to ross cross and Bective to Summerhill if the wind is westerly. There are no hills as such just a few bumps over motorway bridges and 2x1Km drags between Trim and Summerhill being the most severe. I started at 08:30am so mostly traffic free and a safe route. No gravel patches or dangerous bends worth reporting. Be alert on your exit from Ashbourne that you don't take the on ramp for the M2 instead of going straight for the old N2.:o
40 Euro registration on the day.

€40 a bit steep. Any more details? I think they made a mistake with the pricing as if it were cheaper they'd attract far more.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 hassle travel

Rang the number on the website on Friday, the cost is €40 if you're a member of ratoath gaa, €50 for Joe public. Too steep, all that is provided is food on route, no tshirt etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,684 ✭✭✭macadam

    GREEDY:eek::eek:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 581 ✭✭✭greenmat

Thats me out, €50 too much, need new overshoes and gloves, I'll spend that €50 on them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

Was considering this but at 50 German Euros I will be giving it a miss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,131 ✭✭✭Dermot Illogical

I would have loved to do this one, but they've priced it to fail.

    I see it's 40 but +1 just too pricey.
If it was 15-20 I'd be doing it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭QueensGael

Very pricey indeed, and no details about SAG wagon, food or signage. Not sure what I'd get out of it over going out for a spin myself!

I'm beginning to think sponsored cycles are the new table quizzes :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭velo.2010

    E50 for non-members!:(

Rip-off given the current economic climate. I bet they still have the 2007 calender hanging in the clubhouse!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,089 ✭✭✭marketty

Maybe a few of us should send emails saying we'd be interested at a lower price? I doubt they'll get many at €50, I'm out at that price anyway

Anyone got a contact email for them?

I was hoping to head up for this one as the brother in law lives in Ratoath but Im not willing to pay 50 blips for the priviledge.

My local GAA club (Clane) did one and charged 20€ for everyone who turned up (makes more sense the more who do it the more they make for the club) and it was good craic

Will definitely be giving this a miss so. Seems that cycling events like this are jumping on the current cycling boom in the same way dodgy 40 quid (or some other extortionate amount) 10ks have been exploiting runners for the past few years.

But cyclists are far stingier more discerning

Exploitation requires compulsion. Where is the compulsion?

This is a fundraiser for a GAA club. You are welcome to cycle on the roads wherever and whenever you like, for free, alone or with friends. You don't even need to pay road tax. :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,131 ✭✭✭Dermot Illogical

While I don't (generally) wish anyone ill....it would be nice to see this event do no more than break even. It's at a nice time of the year to send a message to other events that people expect at least a little bit of value for money.
For 50 notes I could cycle that route dining in restaurants along the way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭mikerd4

Ive sent them a email and linked the thread. Ive asked for clarification on the fee for non members, I know €40 is still steep for a fundraiser spin but its better than €50!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,010 ✭✭✭velo.2010

If they're looking in. e25 is all I'd pay for an end of January event. The Brannigan Memorial spin at the end of October was only e20! And that managed to raise money for a good cause.

If Ratoath GAA want to pay off a new clubhouse then let the members pay a few bob more - not the visiting cyclists who have nothing to do with the clubhouse bar the afters being held in there.;)

OK but you get my point (I think). The average newb or local won't typically know the difference. They'll sign up regardless.

    And I pay road tax on my car. Don't I.....don't I? ;)

Since €40 is the only figure appearing on the poster, perhaps the event is intended primarily for loyal club members who are prepared to dig deep.

But €50, in January, for the Joe Soaps who have no connection with the club really does seem ridiculous ... until you look at what the picture on the poster appears to promise. Fantastic weather, shorts and T-shirts all round, huge crowds turning out to cheer us all along and lots of excitement and drama at the finish. What more could you ask for?!

Not only does it cost 50 quid but u have to wear the clubs shorts over your cycling shorts and the full length knee socks too.

Bit too much for me to take !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 283 ✭✭mikerd4

Does no one bother to read posts? its 40€ not 50€, like I said its not a big drop but at least if you are having a go give the right info!

Hassle Travel (See post #13) who rang the number on the website was told that its €40 for members of Ratoath GAA Club and €50 for non members. Are there many members on here?

You've asked for clarification but the wording suggests that you are still awaiting a response. Regardless, I doubt they'll get many takers for €40 at this time of year, particulary when so little information about the event is offered.

Sorry I apologise, it seems the reply I typed on my phone didnt post up.

I got an email back from teh guy organising it and he said its 40€ for everyone, there is no distinction between club members and non club members. Still steep I know but they feel its a fair price, so its there choice

Hope it works out for them. I think they've missed a chance here though. The old Celtic tiger mindset's not dead yet....

Lets organise a group to do the cycle and pay nothing, roads are not closed so can't stop us.:)

    Joking.

The route looks really flat - only 250m of climbing in 100k...

Tempted by this. Alternative is a big gear grind up some hills with a small group but legs are tired after a tough midweek session. Needs to be an ice free start though in the morning. Here's hoping!

going to give this a miss
if anyone here does this, can you post feedback
    cheers and good luck
