Home heating?

    Really cant find the place to ask this...

    Heres the scenario. 3 rooms in a house are occupied most of the day. When the heating goes on, 2 of the rooms have the radiators open and those rooms get heated. The heating is on from say 10-12. The third room has the radiators closed at this point.

    The third room gets occupied at about 1, and the heating goes on again to heat that room. The other 2 rooms have their radiators turned off at this point as they are warm.

    Would it be more economical to heat all three rooms at the same time leaving the 3 radiators open for the time that the heating goes on in the morning? Or would it be better to only heat each room separately as is currently being done?

    Which way will cost less Gas/oil?

    I cannot pin this one down 4 you by pointing to a website but I had always heard that it costs more to heat a house up a degree if let it go cold rather than to maintain a minimum temperature in the house throughout a cold spell. So I never let the house get to cold.

    There are many factors such as insulation/heat loss, residents, even appropiate clothing such as thermal underware, thermostatic valves, also damp getting in from the air in our climate, so experimentation would seem to be the way forward.

    it seem to me your problem is a lack of heat retention. so why not deal with the source of your problem and improve your insulation/ building fabric..

    Its really nothing to do with how the house is insulated, I'm just trying to figure out which is more economical on fuel.

    Scenario A
    heating turned on for 2 hours
    2 rooms with radiators open, 1 room with radiator closed.
    heating turned off.

    an hour later,

    heating turned on for 2 hours
    2 rooms with radiators closed, 1 room with radiator open.
    heating turned off.

    or

    Scenario B
    heating turned on for 2 hours
    3 rooms with radiators open.
    heating turned off.
