Ok I know the pc brigade are going to want to slate me for this - but I thought I'd ask anyway as I need some realistic advice please... I sold my car the other day but the new one I'm buying is not going to be ready for a few weeks. A mate of mine gave me a lend of his old car that he has not got around to selling yet - however it has no tax or NCT as it has been off the road.

I don't need it for going to work, but I might need to do the odd trip to the shops etc - I'm only going to use it for the odd essential trip if I cannot get a lift from a friend etc - but I'm not going to tax and nct it when I might end up only driving it a few times. (I will have insurance obviously). What I want to do is get it booked into the nct so I have a date, and then get all the forms what's needed to tax it - and have them with me as if I'm about to go do it that week. This way if I do get pulled over by the guards hopefully will let me away with it. What do you think?

Ok I know they can technically take the car off me, but its only worth €400 or so. My cars are normally always totally up to date with all docs etc but it's a 2L car so expensive tax for just a few journeys.

Make sure you have an insurance disc for the car in question or expect to be walking home without a car. Having no NCT along with no tax is really taking the pi$$ and I wouldn't be expecting the Garda to say "on yer way my son" at a checkpoint. I presume for €400 she is a deathtrap edition with bald tyres, dodgy lights and other items the Gardaí could also do you for?

Gardai have seen it alllllllllllllllll before. Irrespective of what you've got with you for tax, they'll do you. As for NCT, if its that long out then its 5 points time. I think a bus or taxi would be cheaper.

Also note, its generally traffic corps checking tax and Insurance. Those lads would do their grannies. Ask the guards on here.
