Cellotaped passport?

My passport is in pretty bad nick, the plastic card bit with all the info on has recently snapped along the spine of it i.e. just below the Éire/Ireland/Irlande part but above the photo and all the info.

Obviously I am going to have to tape this back together and get a new one soon.

I am flying to Glasgow at the end of this month with RyanAir. Now given the fact you don't even actually need a passport to fly inside the Common Travel Area (as far as I know), should this pose much of a problem? I am also a UK and Irish citizen, if that matters either.

Last time I went to Glasgow with Ryanair they only accepted passports.

Ok these 2 replies don't really answer any question I've asked. RyanAir say you need a passport, but you don't legally need one, that's just RyanAir being dicks as usual. Anyway I'm not asking if I can just throw the passport away and be fine.

So what exactly are you asking ??

Look if you want to fly YOU WILL NEED A PASSPORT weather it's in the common travel area or not, those are the rules the airlines have.

You can try and tape it back together but if it's in the state that you say they will not leave you board.

    Simple as.

if you want to travel with Ryanair, then yes you need a passport. Legally you don't, but that is besides the point. Ryanair T&C's clearly state that they only accept passport as ID and you accepted these T&C's when you booked, so if you want to travel with them you need to honour this requirement. You can stand in the airport and argue with the badly paid Ryanair staff member all you want, call Michael O'Leary a dick, point out that it is not a legal requirement, but it won't get you anywhere.

the replies given did in fact answer your question, they just didn't give the answer you wanted to hear.

If the flights were cheap, change them to aerlingus - they accept a driving licence as id.

Don't bother taping it as no responsible organisation will accept it in the state you describe.

Send it off and pay for a new one.

Folks are trying to help you so take it down a notch.

Ryanair aren't being dicks, you agreed to their policy re passports when you booked your flight. Take more care of your passport! They may or may not accept the passport as you intend to present it,but i wouldn't be surprised if they don't.

You have plenty of time to get a new one, removing any doubt at the gate.

    Correct

I have flown 4-5 times recently with the passport in practically as bad a state, without issue. This suggests it is not 'simple as'.

Answering questions I haven't asked is a very poor attempt at helping.

Last time I checked, it took months to get a new passport. What is the current status do you know?

You won't be getting any more answers now.
