Thinking of an upgrade

    Hi Lads,

I am currently driving a 01 1.4l golf and was thinking of upgrading.

Would prefer to go to a dealer as I want to trade the golf and I don't have enough knowledge or know anyone who would be able to check the cars from a private sale.

My budget would be around 5.5k plus whatever I get for the golf.

I am looking for something that would be fun to drive, preferably 2005 or newer and more power than the golf would be nice.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Sell the Golf privately and buy privately.

At that money you'll be parting with cash and your car and driving away something in reality worth less than €5K in the end..

    Something like this:

Cost to change would probably be around €6.5k but selling the Golf privately it is worth about €1500 to €1800. Should not be too hard to sell as young lads have a hard on for Golfs of that vintage.

Funny, I hadn't really thought of an alpha. My only experience of them has been people complaining about them. Have they improved recently or something?

Depends on here who you ask. Personally I think they're riddled with issues they are however a VERY fun car to drive.

I dont care what anyone else thinks, but those Alfa gt's really are automotive porn.

A MkIV 1.4 Golf is hardly the last word in reliability either and the OP managed fine with that up to now. The GT might need a bit more tlc but worth it imo.

The golf hasnt given me much trouble. Just have to keep a bottle if oil in the boot at all times and the warning light that seems to be on in every golf I have seen is on, which the mechanics can't figure out

Things to watch on the GT, the oil level on the petrol GT needs to be checked regularly, the timing belt needs to be changed every 36k miles afaik and suspension parts wear quickly on them. Other than that they are a great car, great to drive and stunning design.

Yes contrary to many beliefs ALFA's have improved hugely in recent years although the improvements in reliability have been at the expense of some of the character that the older Alfa's have.Something like a GT or 147/156 would be a nice machine and you would easily get a mint one inside you budget.

Oh and you'll be pulling all night long in an Alfa GT...:D
