Advice on used cars

    Hi all,

My car met its end on Monday last so I’ve spent the last few days looking for a replacement.

I do a good bit of driving so I want something with quite low mileage and preferably a diesel

I also want something in the low tax bracket (A, B or maybe a stretch to C)
Basically I’d been spending €70 - €80 a week on petrol in my last car so I want to try save on that as much as I can!!

But most importantly I want something reliable!

Now to the main part of the question - I’ve got it down to 2 cars (I think!!) and just want people's opinions from experience what there like (as I’ve never driven either for a prolonged length of time)

    I'm looking at
    2008 VW Golfs 1.9
    or
    2010 Renault Megane Hatchbacks 1.5

    Both Diesel
Megane tax bracket A - Golf is bracket B
Cheaper insurance (although not much in it) on the Megane
Obviously less mileage on the megane because its 2 years newer
    The megane is also cheaper

Writing all this down it looks like a simple decision!!
But as far as I know the Renaults have had issues in the past with things like Electronics?
I've never heard of many complaints about the Golf

Has anyone got any experience with either of these cars?
Do the Renaults still have their issues?
Do VW or golfs specifically have any regular problems like this?

Hopefully that’s all the info required!

Apologies for the long winded post but I’ve no doubt there’s a few people out there who will be able to advise me!

    Thanks in advance,

    N

What is your weekly mileage and overall budget?

    OCTAVIA... ;)

Sorry should have put them in!

Weekly milage is around 400 miles
over 20K a year on average over the last few years!

My absolutely very max budget is €14,000 but i'd like to stay as far from that as I can!

Look at this... remember is has 5 years and 130,000Km of warranty left to run. You could go a year older - save some more cash and still have 4 years warranty left to run.

I reckon my next family car will be a KIA or Hyundai - so I can keep it longer with less worries.

I know the 7 year warrenty that Kia offer is great!
But it is outside of my price bracket! Also I don't really like the ceed for some reason - even though there not unlike a lot of other cars that I like!!

I'm hoping to spend no more than 12, but I could probably push to 14 but definitely no higher!

    Volvo S40 ... either 1.6d or 2.0d

Here's an example... probably better ones around for your budget if you look
