I'm soooo hungry

So I posted a thread about going on a low carb diet on a low budget earlier in the week, upon the responses from posters I decided to that low carb was not for me and decided just to eat healthier. And see where that got me weight wise.

I started this yesterday, after having my usual breakfast, but stuck to it from lunch on. Then I woke up this morning starving, I had my breakfast at half 5, which consisted of some low day cereal and smoothie. I just had a snack at 11 a rice cake and a banana. And although it has taken away the real uncomfortable feeling there is still a niggleing. I thought I would feel fuller on the healthier stuff, but I was never this hungry when I was eating crap. Is there anything I can fill up on with little to no calories?

I can't think of any miracle food thats low calorie that will fill you up.

Eat a better breakfast in future. Ditch the cereal. Have eggs.

    Nyom nyom nyom eggs.

I think a big part of the low carb high protein type diet is that Protein fills you for longer - taking an al la carte approach to your diet probably won't work.

If you had to have had a quality low carb diet of eggs, some bacon or salmon and an avocado with an 11 o'clock snack of a can of tuna and maybe some nuts you'd survive much better.

I think you are much better of sticking to something rigidly till you understand why it works and what works for you before you start introducing other foods into your diet.

edit - rice cakes are rubbish, low calories maybe but they do nothing for you

Okay then I will have some eggs in the morning and see how that goes. I know that rice cakes aren't great but I got ones that are covered in chocolate and still low in fat and calories so I'll be sticking with them for a while as a snack.

Finally any good what are good nuts and seeds to snack on. I really like cashews, but I'm guessing I should avoid those with salt and I am assuming sunflower seeds are okay?

your going from one extreme to another tbh. Even though I'm not a fan of low carb you still need plenty protein and some good fats and I don't see any in there? Rice cakes and bananas are not very substantial snacks either and if you have porridge / brown bread or eggs you shouldn't really need to snack before lunch

No snack between breakfast and lunch?, there's usually around 7 and a half hours between breakfast and lunch for me!

I've recently embarked on a healthy eating lifestyle- I don't need to loose weight but I have a tiny bit of a belly which pisses me off. I usually eat a fair bit of junk, consume about 20 pints of beer a week + a take away.

Anyway, I love my food so eating less is hard for me but the following routine is working fine for me.

8 AM: 50g bowl of porridge made with water. Milk added after. Cup of coffee: circa 350 calories

12pm: Tuna sandwich/healthy sandwich on brown bread, cup of coffee : circa 400 calories

4pm: Pack of those light thai style crisps(sensations i think?) and a coffee: circa 100 calories

7pm: portion of lean meat with a load of veg: circa 500 calories.

I cycle to and from work (10k km round trip and do a 5 k run 5 times a week).

I drink as normal, and still consume circa 20 pints a week(sometimes 10), try to avoid the takaways after but do give in sometimes.

Just before xmas I picked up a cheap pair of jeans from jack and jones..waste 32 and bloody hell I could barely close them...they fit now, and comfortably too..that was from 3 weeks on the above routine.

Sunflower seeds are good as are pumpkin, nuts you need to be careful with as they have a high calorie count but almonds, walnuts etc are great, full of good fats and reasonably cheap too ( Aldi ) - I read somewhere before that eating nuts with say an apple will make you feel fuller for much longer ( protein and simple carbs together I presume )

What kind of cereal? Have you tried oats with fruit and natural yoghurt? I have this most mornings and it keeps me full for hours!

    Eggs are also filling.

Make sure you're drinking enough water as well, often we think we're hungry when in fact we're thirsty.

Genius, so scrap the burgers at half time and have water...nice one!

Op- the answer is no,u can't really fill up on low cal stuff.ur body will crave food if you're not giving it enough.if you're dieting you'll be hungry a lot.just got to deal with it.

those rice cakes are fine for taking the edge off.no nutrition but so what!you're trying to lose weight,as long as your big meals are balanced those little snacks will not have a negative effect.some people go mad here about everything they eat having to be optimally nutritious but it's a bit over the top sometimes.

if you're not going to count your cals just keep your portions small and have 2 snacks a day.weigh yourself in the morning and measure your waist...both once a week and at the same time.if you're not losing then eat less or exercise a bit more(or both ) and check back the following week...etc etc...imo it's prob easier if you count cals for the first month.after that you'll have a fair idea what works.

    You could do better! ;-)

Brekfast sounds fine, just a couple of questions. Low fat or full fat milk? Black or white coffee? Have you considered green tea as an alternative to coffee? Especially since you have another couple of cups later in the day. If you're serious about losing weight, try and limit the coffee to once a day.

For optimum weight loss and to improve your digestion, your evening meal should be lower in calories than your midday meal. You should also aim to eat less protein at evenings, as the body has problems digesting it - aim instead for more carbs, which will help you get a better night's sleep.

Your diet seems to be missing fruit - perhaps add one with your breakfast in the morning - some berries for example. And a banana in the afternoon as a snack with some yoghurt.

what has coffee to do with losing weight
it's an appetite suppressant as well, i'd say keep drinking it

Too much coffee raises the level of cortisol (aka the stress hormone). This in turn affects the distribution of body fat and can increase cravings for sugary foods. See here:

"A Yale study found that along with symptoms of hypoglycemia, the participants also had an increase in the amount of cortisol in their bodies. Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal gland. It has numerous functions, one of which is the distribution of fat throughout the body. According to researchers at the University of New Mexico, high levels of cortisol cause fat stores and excess circulating fat to be relocated and deposited deep in the abdomen. In addition, increased cortisol is associated with increased appetite and cravings for sugar, all possible hindrances to weight loss."

bloody big time on the coffee - keep it in as long as its not disrupting your sleep

there are farrrr more big holes in this persons diet than 'reduce the coffee' which has zero caloires

Wow esperanza just read the rest of your post and to be honest is a clusterfu~k of advice e.g. the body has problems digesting protein in the evening? So when pray tell does this start 5pm, 6pm, 8pm??

call me crazy but 20 flippin pints on the weekend!!! Is that not the elephant in the room here.

Well, I'm afraid lots of qualified dieticians and nutritionists would care to disagree with you! They do say, ignorance is bliss though.

You're drinking 10 pints on a fri, then on a sat I presume? You might as well have a massive takeaway both those days instead for all the good it's doing you (You prob have a takeaway those days anyways) That's verging on 2000 calories alone each night, so no point in counting the other calories. Drinking something else, maybe move onto shorts (although you should just drink less).

Alcohol - other than the occasional glass of red wine - has no place in a healthy diet.

I think that's the problem, he won't stop, so he needs to limit exposure.

I don't drink beer but I do have a few drinks at the weekend, I drink tea and coffee, I don't eat fruit and I've a healthy diet... I didn't drink for a long time but I'm young and a few drinks won't kill me! 20pints is extreme / pointless when trying to lose weight!

Turkey, white fish and eggs keep me full :)

What you think will help one lose weight (low fat etc) I know from personal experience doesn't work for everyone.
