Free versions of these should help.

    Superantispyware

    Malwarebytes

I like avira. It uses less system resources than most of them and is effective. Negatives are minor - an occasional popup when it autoupdates, and the occasional false positive.

    MSE
    Microsoft Security Essentials.

Who knows their system better than Microsoft and they give away a free virus protection system to help you!

Back it up with the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-malware (run it once a month on average) and your well covered.

AVG is fine but it strains some systems more in resources and applications it sometimes causes response time lag in.

If they knew their system that well then the holes wouldn't exist in the first place!

OP - if you're downloading because you have a virus to get rid of, bear in mind that you might need to download using another PC (to avoid hijacked links in-browser) and transfer via CD or USB, the install and/or scan in "Safe Mode".

I'm a fan of the Free version of Avast, never had any issues in 3 years using avast combined with malwarebytes and spybot
