I think this ad is great. I burst out laughing when I first saw it the other day. The way the Dad looks at the mother was the exact same reaction of my own Dad!

Although I don't see why the youtube poster needs to describe the ad as being 'wrong'.

    Check it out!

Is it wrong that I want to correct his grammar? :o

The way he say "about David and me" (as opposed to I)? Me is actually correct here!:D
A direct object is required in this case. You wouldn't say: "There is something I need to tell you about I".

"about myself and David" would be more correct:)

I don't agree. "There is something I need to tell you about me/myself" would be equally correct. However, the convention in grammatical English is to put yourself (the speaker/writer) last, so "about David and myself/me" would be the most correct.

David is cute but I prefer the other guy! :)

If he said "there is something you need to know about David and me/myself" then yes, but when he put himself as the principal by saying "There is something I've been meaning to tell you, about me/myself and David" becomes the correct way yo say it, AFAIK.

Please don't say people are finding that offensive?

Nice - gets its point across gently and in a very "normal" way.

Who'd have thought B na M would be making ads like this?
Well done to them too. :)

I must email some congrats to them because I'm sure they're getting plenty of negative feedback from the usual suspects

The grammar didn't bother me too much. My main thought watching the ad was that David is quite cute. :o

It seems that the grammar discussion has spilled over into the comments section on the YouTube page for the video too. Alright, hands up who's at fault. :P

    Love the top YouTube comments:

"That is so wrong. It should be David and I." - KanD0060

"As a friend of mine said, it's highly irresponsible to come out to your Dad when he has a tray full of hot tea in his hands." - tonyttt31

That's brilliant :D Normally I'm the first to complain about grammar mistakes but that ad has distracted me enough to not care anymore.

Nice one, it's a cool ad for some reason. I like the way they use the scarf on David to add a hint of gay.

Ah, I dunno...the guy on the right is not particularly camp at all anyway. He probably straight in real life anyway! You must want He-Man or something!! :)

Not camp no but there's a fair distance between Graham Norton and Hugh Jackman and i'd say he falls somewhere about the middle. Anyway just don't think he is good looking either, apples and oranges really :-)

I long for the time when gay couples can be used in ads or TV shows and their presence isn't a novelty or gimmick and is considered normal, not an exception to be highlighted or trivialised.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166,026 ✭✭✭✭LegacyUser

I think the potential for offence here is in the implication that "it's gonna be a long night" for the son and David to justify their relationship!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 299 ✭✭Donnaghm

God there's a disappointing amount of backward f***heads still left in the country judging by a substantial portion of the comments. What I find really peculiar is that these people spend their time looking for and at gay related clips on YouTube just to troll and offend people.

Then they'll get the shock factor by having the couple perform filthy acts with briquettes. Bord Na Mooooaaaaaaana

He may do musicals but alias he is as straight as they get

Not as far as I know, we can live in hope though! ;)

I'm making comparrison between camp and manly not between gays!

All of those BnM ads are a bit weird, not just the gay couple one. The only thing that I have an issue with is the stupid 'gay' scarf!

The people behind the ad were probably thinking "right, we'll have one stereotypical gay and one non-stereotypical gay...that'll keep everyone happy! oh wait..we don't want him to be too camp though.....hmmm ah sure let's just stick a gay scarf on him!" :pac:

I think it's good that ads like this are appearing. How many of us would have laughed if we'd been told this would happen only 5 years ago ? Not sure what BnM are trying to do aiming ads at the gay community, but at least it's made us remember the product, (maybe not buy it specifically) which is the aim of advertising.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,512 ✭✭✭baby and crumble

I don't think the ad is 'aimed' at the gay community. I think it's more aimed at parents of gay kids. Let's be realistic, it's not usually a conversation that goes fast, and every parent who has 'been come out to' will remember that conversation. I know my parents do. And my Mum used to get a little chuckle about how I chose to come out while she was eating a sardine sandwich- every time I said "mam, can i have a chat?" she would immediately say "Do I need a sardine sandwich for this?"

It's not aimed at us, it's aimed at our parents generation, which I think is great.

When reading the comments on Youtube, I find it to be much preferential to dose hot acid in my eyes whilst a group of Filipino dwarfs use my testicles as a high jump launch pad.

It's actually a much less painful experience.

I don't see the ad being aimed at one group in specific but instead they wanted to create an ad that would catch people's attention and get people talking about the " Gay Bord na Móna ad"...which it seems to be successful in doing! :D

My guess is that a substantial number of those posting comments are not Irish

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Agreed - the target is everyone - not gay people, not parents

It's just kinda old fashioned. Though I'm wondering how many people came out to their folks with their boyfriend beside them?
