ASUS X53TA or HP G6

    Hi there

Not posted on here before but was looking for some advice on choosing between two laptops around the €500 mark:

    ASUS X53TA €550
    HP G6-1241 €499.99

I think they're both fairly similar and either would probably meet my needs but I'm leaning towards the ASUS as it seems to be rated more highly from what I've read. Also it has USB 3 port.

However the G6 is €50 cheaper and has the i5 2430 which is a better processor than the Phenom II x4 which is making me unsure.

Main uses will be web browsing, Word/Excel, some games (not hardcore though), music/DVDs, Dreamweaver, Photoshop.

    Any help/advice much appreciated.

    If you prefer the AMD setup, here's a superior A8 with 6gb RAM / 1tb HDD for €479? http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/HP-Pavilion-g61220sa-156andquot-Laptop-Charcoal-Grey/309334/301

You can't game with the G6, no dedicated graphics.

The Asus is the better choice. It's processor is actually the newer A6-3400m which comes with dual graphics capable of medium gaming. The A6 is worse than the i5 by a significant amount but will still be plenty for your needs.

thanks a lot. not a serious gamer, didn't realise a dedicated graphics card was a must.

    What games do you play?

Sandybridge i5s such as the i5-2430M or the i5-2520M can easily handle most not-too-recent games.

Unless you play very demanding games, i'd recommend an i5 instead. The difference in CPU performance is huge.

Personally, i'd up the budget to €600 and buy this...

i5-2430M and GT540M. No compromises in either GPU or CPU performance. You only buy a laptop every couple of years. Spend €100 and get an extra year or two out of the laptop.

A6 and A8 actually bench decent on gaming graphics. i5 is still a nice crafty processor though.

    thanks again.

i had been wondering if the i5 was a better bet from a longevity point of view, i don't tend to upgrade that frequently and that acer would just about be in my budget.

not sure if i want to go to 14", am just pretty used to 15"+. think i'll have a look at one and see how i find it before deciding.

I dont fancy Acer as a brand but its a decent spec. Battery Life won't be fantastic in the Real World but such is life.

Checked out a 14" last night, I like the size a lot.

I've seen Acer get a mixed response in a few places. Can I ask why you're not mad about them Overheal?

Update: Have checked a few old threads Acers as well as this survey, looks like some have build & reliability issues with them. Think will look a bit longer at other options over the weekend before deciding.
