I know this isn't really the right forum for this, but I had always thought that Paypal was one of the safer ways to transfer funds for buying/selling watches privately on TZ-UK/Watchuseek/Ebay etc.

I guess though you've got to be pretty careful as a seller.

This story has been on twitter this morning and is in a few papers in the UK.

Paypal order antique violin be destroyed for refund

In light of the negative publicity I'm sure she'll get a refund, but it's still a bit scary

Paypal and eBay can be nightmares for sellers! The protection is great if you're buying something, but you can easily be left out of pocket as a seller if you get a dodgy claim against you.

This is thankfully a minor example, but I was selling a Tag Heuer on eBay a while ago. Someone used the "buy it now" option, but was obviously a scammer.

I was charged the 10% of the item's price, despite not getting paid. Because I went through the correct channels, I then had to wait about 2 weeks before I could relist the item and get my fee returned.

After all that, I'm not allowed give negative feedback to the scammer, whose account was never closed. When I viewed their profile, there was nothing there to indicate that they had not paid for an item and never responded to me or paypal.

Like I said - a minor example, but a very common one of how all the protection is on the buyer's side, not the seller.
