    Hi

I'm looking to buy a 7 seater, something like 2005 on opel zafira would do the job.
(would love a ford smax but too expensive)
Its between a 1.6 petrol and the other a 1.9cdti.
Just wondering which is the best to buy.
The 1.9cdti is a better drive i'm told but unreliable as I hear they give a lot of trouble with engines, turbos , flywheels etc.
What's the 1.6 petrol like and how much harder would they be on fuel.

    Thanks

The Opel 1.6 engine is not hard on fuel at all and unless you are doing big mileage there would be no reason to get the diesel version over it IMO.
I had a 1.6 zafira for a week and even fully laden it was returning better mpg then the passat 1.6fsi the wife had at the time.

The 1.9cdti does give trouble with swirl flaps and throttle bodies amongst other niggling problems.

The 1.6 engines are very reliable when serviced properly and even if problems do occur(coilpack being one that comes to mind) the parts are widely available after market so aren't expensive.

1.6 is best engine imho. if you are carrying seven all the time you wont get great milage. your text choice has given me chillblaines.

Thanks, I think the 1.9 does around 45mpg ..would the 1.6 do near the 40mpg if so looks the better choice already and tax cheaper too

only ever driven the 1.9 diesel for a couple of weeks as a rental car and it was fine. However, there was 7 of us in a 1.6 petrol a few weeks back driving down the country and it was not having any problems on the motorway so I wouldnt be at all worried about its load carrying ability. I wasnt driving though so didnt check what the fuel consumption was like

Had a rental one to carry seven members of the family to Kerry and back over a weekend and it was the 1.6 petrol engine. I really wasn't a fan the engine was noisy, gutless and just very harsh I suppose. The interior was fairly cheap and nasty and the 7 seats arrangement was just frustrating at the best of times. Fuel economy wasn't great either. But then again if the car is purely for family transport and you don't do big miles it should be ok.

I can't see the 1.6 getting anywhere near 40mpg unless the car is empty and cruising at 60mph in 5th.
