Dyanmic Gold SL 300 - shafts fitted

    Hi

During last summer I went for a club fitting to a well known fitter near Dublin. I have Mizuno irons with dynamic gold s300 shafts. After the fitting it was suggested that I get the SL 300 shafts fitted with Golf pride multi compound medium sized grips. Shafts are about 24 grams lighter. Supposed to be improve swing speed.

First thing I noticed was the massive difference in the grip/shaft width but not a huge difference in the weight. I continued using them, but no difference in my game

Out of curiosity I borrowed my brothers irons, which are the same mizuno clubs (except 1/2 inch shorter), very similar lie angle as far as I can tell and dynamic gold s300 shafts. Between the 2 of us, we could not feel any difference in the weight - only the grip size difference. I even weighed both and there was there was just about an ounce in the difference

Where is the 24 grams gone here ? Am I missing something here with club fitting ...?

    Thanks

    Mick

24 grams <= just about an ounce .. No ..? And then when you are dealing with such exact numbers things like grips etc can add an extra few grams her and their.

Couple that with, and this is only what I am led to believe from researching shafts elsewhere. The shaft making process is not actually that exact, when DG are making shafts lets say they are making stiff ones. They are all made in the same process and then weighed afterwards to find out if the shafts fall within a certain tolerance, the ones that do fall within that tolerance become S300's and the ones that are too heavy become S400's. I'm not 100% sure but I would presume that the light ones become SL300's, but it's not that exact their is a tolerance level e.g your S300 7i shaft could be a little heavier the Joe Bloggs 7i S300.

Also to add to that, doubt any club fitter would be too worried about overall weight of a club. They probably did not even weigh them, what they probably did do was check you swing weights and matched them throughout your set. Swing weights are very dynamic and pretty hard to work out unless you have the equipment to measure it but pretty important all the same. If it's the fitter I think it is you probably don't have a clue what the swing weights for your clubs actually are, but I would imagine they match up.

Anyway I would presume they advised them particular shafts because they wanted a particular swing weight and not a particular overall weight. Hope that helps, and I could be wrong so if anyone else has any ideas I might stand corrected.

FWIW I was using MP52 with DG S300 and went for a fitting with Titleist, I picked up around 12 yds (on a 6 iron) by changing to an AP2 with the DG SL S300.
I don't think the two heads are very different and I've since changed to MP53 with DG SL S300 and reckon I'm around a club longer.

The shaft makes the club IMO:)

All I notice is the grip is much thicker - i get less feel. Did you notice the same with the thicker shaft?

Also agreed on weight in previous reply - 1 ounce is about 28g which is not much ...

I haven't noticed the shaft being much thicker to be honest, not in the grip end anyway. Feel is so hard to quantify though, the shaft is a lot lighter so the feel is going to be different. But I've only played 4 or 5 rounds since the change so still getting used to the different shafts.

Do you meant that you went from standard grips to midsize grips?
Midsize would be 1/16" larger in diameter.
They would also be heavier so that could make the actual weight difference between the clubs more like 10grams.

Yes - midsize. Might go back to standard. Thanks

I was very interested in the new ap2s in the DG SL 300. Local shop got them in but I was immediately surprised at how light they felt and that's in comparison to my own which are ns pro 1050s which are apparently the same weight. I've really hummed and hawed about them and have decided not to plum for them just yet (a financial decision as much as anything). But yeah, I have to say I though they were noticeably lighter and definitely lighter than the dgS300s. They are also noticeably thicker in the hand but that wouldnt bother me. In fact I thought it felt quite good.

Dont know much about the SL 300 shaft but I hate Dynamic Gold shafts myself. I realise this is a personal opinion but they are just not the shaft for me. I have a set of MP 57's with Project X 5.5 shafts which gave me much more feel than DG S 300's in the same club head. The DG S300 felt heavy and boardy to me. It think DG shafts are cheap and therefore the stock option in most clubs. Out of interest OP see can you get your hands on a club with a KBS shaft, I thought these were nice also with a high but boring ballflight. By the way the KBS was in a set of AP2's at a titleist fitting day at my club.
I was also recently with a mate who was trying a load of clubs at a fitting session in Mcguirks in Kinsealy and it amazed him the difference between different shafts in the same head.
