Taken today at the hotel end of the Southern Cross in Bray.

    Map: http://g.co/maps/wa9b7

Probably the most dangerous piece of driving I've seen in quite some time. Just before rush hour and luckily no one was turning right coming from the Southern Cross:

For the record, the driver was an extremely elderly lady who seemed oblivious to what she had just done.

Just a note, video has no sound (For good reason ;) )

She needs to be off the road if she's driving like that! She will kill herself, someone else or be the cause of a serious accident

    There's your problem!
The problem is, according to the RSA, accidents are caused by young, male drivers, since she is neither, the problem officially doesn't exist.
And that is as far as that one will go, should you ever bother make the case at them.
As far as I can make out, prescription drugs, extreme age, mental illness, room temperature IQ, extreme incompetence by anyone over 50, total ignorance of the ROTR, complete disregard of any rule other than speed limit and finally, complete inability to correctly use the lights on a vehicle are not seen as contributing factors to accidents and are therefore ignored by the Gardai, politicians and the RSA.
I'm just waiting for the usual "The RSA Is God And Cannot Be Wrong!" brigade to show up and prove to us by statistic that the above video cannot have happened, it's all boyracers and that we are all lunatic speed demons who are out to kill as many people on the road as possible.
    Any moment now...

Should be every 6 months, with eyes checked and doctor check every 6 months ago.

Came across a middle aged woman doing the same on the Parkway roundabout in Limerick about 2 years ago. Also oblivious to anything being wrong.

Young male drivers killing themselves every other week - and that's with some stiff competition (granny havin a laugh on roundabout, for instance)

This sort of thing wouldn't surprise me in the slightest when it comes to roundabouts. Peoples use (misuse) of roundabouts never fail to unnerve me. In fact I was only saying to somebody the other day it will only be a matter of time before I see somebody going around a roundabout the incorrect way...and I do very little mileage these times.

Bit extreme maybe? With all the over 70's being on free medical cards Reilly will be telling you there is no money in the kitty for this....and there isin't. Maybe if there is a notable deterioration in their eyesight from one visit to the next, more frequent visits should be necessitated? Having said all that youu could hardly blame her eyesight on this one. Looks to me like an old lady who just doen't know the rules of the road or has forgotten them or something...

Obviously I can't say for certain, but I'd put my money on she was Irish. It was an Irish reg, car was old enough not to be a rental car, she looked Irish etc.

It seems to me that the OP being in the wrong lane is a major contribution to this incident.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,875 ✭✭✭✭MugMugs

OP can I suggest you bring that to the Gardai? We would all be a bit safer with that lass off the road.

Is it time for a 'caught on dash cam' thread yet?:P

Since I got mine, apart from me nearly throwing myself in a ditch, nothing interesting has happened.

I was going to put it in the first post, and I thought to myself, nope the posters on Boards are normally very observant and through. I suggest you get your eyes checked and maybe resit your driving test.

    From The Video:

    From Google Street View:

    6643908611_65474bffbd_z.jpg

    And from Space:

    From the ROTR site:
Conditions at roundabouts may vary. Excercise caution at all times. In particular, be aware of traffic signs, traffic lights, road markings and traffic coming from your right when approaching roundabouts.

By your observation, the right hand lane is technically redundant other than for doing a massive U turn.
OP can I suggest you bring that to the Gardai? We would all be a bit safer with that lass off the road.

I thought about it but lets be honest, nothing would come of it. I didn't get the reg as I was too busy taking the roundabout myself, watching for traffic that may have just been watching her. As for the dash cam thread, I'd be up for that.

Was driving down a one way street last week and a women in her sixtys came driving toward me in her jeep, road was wide enough for me to pull over so when she drew alongside me i wound down the window and told her "this is a one way street and your going the wrong way". Her answer was,"i'm just parking in here and pointed to a parking space".
I just knew by her attitude that having a go at her would be a waste of time because as far as she was concerned she was only going up the wrong way for about 30/40 yards and i got the impression she does it all the time on this particular street.

    Absolutely insane driving.

Just to bring some gender balance but I've encountered a gentleman in a Landrover Defender coming the wrong way around the roundabout at the celbridge west junction on the M4. No dash cam though.

I acknowledge that I missed the anti-clockwise manoeuvre at the approach to the roundabout. As to the remainder of your comment may I suggest that you get your keyboarding skills checked and/or resit your Junior Cert.

Another video, from Stillorgan shopping centre. Not only does it happen once, but twice within the space of 40 seconds. Both cars crossing a continuous white line, into oncoming traffic.

I had a similar incident a few weeks ago going up a slip road from the M20 in Limerick. Came to the roundabout and some elderly driver started indicating to come down the slip on to the wrong side of the motorway. I started gesturing at him to turn around and that it was one way only. What did he do next?

Proceeded to drive towards me and tried to pass my right hand side while shouting at me from inside the car. I turned just enough to block him and rolled down the window and let him have it. I told him that if he was so blind not to be able to understand a sign saying no entry he should get the **** off the road for the safety if everybody else. He ended up reversing on to the roundabout (into oncoming traffic which had to stop) and driving off.

Gardai have his reg though so hopefully he won't be endangering anyone else for much longer.

I'm no exemplar of political correctness by any means but the amount of ageism on this forum is unbelievable.

If you're not male, between 18-40yrs old and live in the greater Dublin area (or one of the two other cities), you are very much a minority. Seriously, the attitudes I encounter here are VASTLY different and less varied to what I experience in real life. And I live part time in Dublin these days...

It's not ageism at all, simply recognising that some of the older generation are either too far mentally or physically gone to be safe drivers any longer. These people should simply give up driving for the sake of themselves and other road users before their forgetfulness costs a life.
