Motorola Xoom and playing mkv files.

    Hi all,

Got my Xoom over Christmas and loving it. Just wondering does anyone know a good app/player that will play .mkv files (720p HD).

I googled around and people are saying dice player but I get awfully laggy/jumpy playback of mkv files. I also read one or two post talking about overclocking the CPU to allow smooth playback but I thought this was a bit mental considering the screen is already HD and should be able to play the content fine....?

    Thoughts?

I use MX Video Player and it seems to play everything so far without any problem or lagging.

Try Mobo player. If anything will play it that will but I fear you might be out of luck as the Xoom's hardware is simply no good at playing back high-def AVIs (and this is true for most of the honeycomb generation of tablets in my experience).

I have tried both MoBo and MX but to no avail. I still get really laggy/jumppy playback.

Kinda bummed to hear that it can't play mkv files :(

I got pretty laggy/jerky playback when using MX Video Player but then I switched to Dice and no problems.

    Edit: I'm using a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 (Android 3.1)

Yeah, it's the single biggest flaw in the device AFAIC but quite a big one, considering tablets that cost a fraction of the price can play them back. If it's any consolation, having watched a fair few hi-def files on my tablet I don't think there's an appreciable difference on such a small screen compared to standard quality AVI.

I use Dice on my Asus Transformer and it plays everything. I'm not sure of the difference in spec between it and the Xoom. I've tried literally every other player and it's the only one that plays high def mkvs.

That said, as pickarooney says, there's no real need for high def files on a tablet.

Waiting for Dice (it's not available atm), was the only player that wasn't laggy for me on 720p mkv's....SG 10.1

I was experiencing the same thing with my Galaxy Tab and tried all the players. The problem with all the players is that they are software accelerated and are prone to lagging especially with high quality mkv files.

Then I tried BSPlayer which is a hardware accelerated media player like Dice and my videos are smooth and no lagging.

I tried out Diceplayer on my Xoom a while ago. On 720p sample files downloaded from divx.com they played perfectly. On 720p files I downloaded from slightly less reputable sources it stuttered. I think the the method encoding of the files is important so if you're encoding them yourself you should be able to get good playback.

Yeah, Xoom can't play MKV videos, and I also tried MoboPlayer and Rock player, but they didn't give me the nice quality, and now I have to use the aneesoft to convert the MKV videos for me.

Hope someone can suggest a nice player,,,,

Cheers mate, this seems to work a treat. As you said, the key here is that it's a hardware accelerated media player.

A new version of it just came out and seems to have broken the playback on the Xoom a little (sometimes it can be a bit laggy) but for the most part, its great!

Definitely an app to keep updated (make sure you read the release notes) and worth supporting when the paid version comes out (€2 - €3??).
