How's your handwriting?

I used to have really nice handwriting, but now that most of my correspondence is done via email or phone/text, I've noticed it's not near as good as it used to be. In fact, writing by hand feels kinda clumsy and awkward for the first minute or so before I get back into the flow of it.

Anyone else noticed this? Judging by the state of some of the Christmas cards I got this year, either people are using child labour or its not just me :D

Absolutely terrible and worse it's inconsistent.

Edwardian script with a contemporary touch. Seriously though, I am quite lucky to have such impeccable writing. I used to practice it a lot when I was younger and it kind of stuck with me. Someone once compared it to the typical style of writing you'd expect to see an a late 18th/ early 19th century handwritten manuscript. No joke.

My job involves filing out report sheets a lot so I'm used to writing.
I've always had very good handwriting but its not consistent, when I'm tired its an absolute shambles.

    right.
suggests you're an outgoing person who is ruled by the heart rather than the head, emotionally expressive, good with communication, probably work in a related area and would make a good actor ;)

I take it you've an interest in/studied graphology? Was always kinda interested in that. By the above it sounds accurate enough to me, (mine leans right-i'm outgoing, my mothers leans left-she's a hermit) but wonder how much information you can actually glean by analysing handwriting, or is it all just a bit ad-lib?

I have lovely girly swirly hand writing.

only what I've read online but part of my fathers work involved calligraphy and when he was training me he had a time of it getting me to lean my script to the right and always seemed surprised that my handwriting went the opposite way. He said women tend to lean more to the right so it was a bit of a puzzle. I never could get the hang of it..and it's still to the left. And from what I've read the description is fairly accurate too.

It's true, everyone I know is either an actor or a traumatised hermit.

well ok thats a fairly rudimentary description :)
but there are some very basic traits that everyone shares.

Doctors tend to have terrible handwriting :-O
Mine is very messy. Maybe we weren't taught as great handwriting as our grandparents (I just say that because my grandparents have lovely handwriting even though they only got education up to 14 years of age of something like that.)

ye, basically. Left slant tend to hide their feelings and control their emotions more than right slant.
Very serious discussion for Ah at this hour.

surely it depends on whether you are left or right handed

For the last 12 years I've been using a PC for 8 hours every day and even before that it was a mobile phone for text. My hand writing really is gone to shít.

don't think so. I'm right handed. My friend is left handed and he writes with a right lean. I am actually ashamed to admit that I actually know this. I also know what I just said makes no sense..

    I've lovely handwriting ;)
or so I get told whenever I use a nice thin felt tip pen, it doesn't really slant forward or backwards.. what does that say about me (other than a lack of modesty?)

Mine leans to the right, and I can confirm the above statement is a load of bull.

vertical is like a mix of both, your more inclined to sit on the fence and apply reason and logic

are you left handed or right handed? and yes of course, you're obviously not ruled by you're emotions at all and tend to hold back what you think. ;)

I've been told the same. I was thinking of writing a note and handing it to a pharmacist to see if he thought it was a prescription. I might get some free pills and potions, preferably with a high street value.:pac:

Can't believe people actually think there's a grain of truth to that bullsh1t. Graphology belongs in the same category as other debunked myths such as phrenology and palmistry.

My handwriting is abysmal, always reckon it has cost me a few grades in examinations, especially LC.

I dont 'believe' in it per se, more an interest into how it developed and is there any accuracy whatsoever to any of the claims it makes. As I said, I see some similarities but like astrology I suppose its just one of those things that can apply to everybody depending on the way you wish to see it.

    Sure.

I've spent a fair few years working with other peoples handwriting. I was a data entry clerk in the archives and spent many hours deciphering and restoring old scripts and journals. Then worked with a couple of international shipping companies inputting delivery and tracking details usually from handwritten dockets and I did grow up with the family business of hand engraving so I've always been looking at handwriting in some form or other and it is kind of interesting. There is a lot to analyse but you can paint a fairly accurate picture of someone's personality if you know what you're looking for. It's not about trickery just observation.

As a citeog you're already a child of the devil. What else do you need to know?

Mine varies wildly. If I'm in a hurry to write it looks like absolute nonsense. I actually use a sort of mnemonic shorthand I know nobody else will understand and then am baffled when I can't make anything out of it myself later. If I take my time I can write nicely.

Does anyone else tense up when they have to sign something because of that nagging fear you'll never be able to reproduce your own name accurately despite years of practice, resulting in some aborted rendition of your signature that then becomes the standard you need to aim for next time in a perverse cycle of dilapidating auto-replication?

It got a mention on a QI programme by Stephen Fry who said that it was a load of old cock, but that this hasn't stopped 3000 UK businesses from using it to vet potential employees.

My handwriting was never good, and then I almost stopped using it altogether. I've been writing on computers for over twenty years now. However, I've been at university for over four years, and they still have the old pen-and-paper exams. I hate it, and I'm pretty sure my writing has cost me marks.

When I leave - less than six months from now - the handwriting will stop again. Schools and universities are the only places left where handwriting is used extensively: out there in the professional, working world, no-one does a huge amount of handwriting any more, just bits and pieces.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

fine fine. I write good and I can't tell anything about you from the way you write that would be silly.

My writing hand doesn't seem to obey my mind anymore, it has a lazy ass mind of it's own now and just scrawls squiggles accross the page when I try and write these days.

Even my signature is difficult, it seems to speed up to a cresendo of swirls that bear no semblance to my actual name.

I can write reasonably fast and legibly, but not both at the same time :(

I'm sick of ads for pens that glide across the paper because I need something instead that will slow me down enough to write clearly. Something like fountain pen or pencil but can't really use those in an exam. Any suggestions ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,130 ✭✭✭Azureus

    A nice gel pen maybe?

I've always wanted to use a proper ink fountain pen, but as a citeog its near impossible without ending up with ink all over your hand and a giant inky smudge where your writing should be :(
    Gel pens maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,122 ✭✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

Mine is quite childish looking, but everyone can read it.

I'd prefer legible but poor looking writing over pretty squiggly bollocks that nobody can read any day.
