If a car is off the road in a private driveway does it have to be taxed/insured?

Private driveway: no. Although if you ever intend to bring it back to use be careful of the proposed changes in how you do that - you may need (in the future) to specifically notify your local council that its off road. Right now you don't.

Legally no, however you are not insured for its loss or theft.

No, nothing happened. Just good old scaremongering.

I bought a car a couple of months ago and it's been sitting in my driveway since. It needs a little bit of work and I'm hoping to get the NCT, tax and insurance etc soon. Does anyone know if I only make a declaration that it has been off the road when I actually go to tax it (and get it signed by a Gard?). In the UK an 'off the road' document (called a SWORN) needs to be completed in such cases but I don't know if there's an equivalent here in Ireland ... anyone know?

You need a RF100 form and fil it up and sign it in the presence of a Garda..

I bought a car for parts (got the same engine size, colour, dead handy), and its tax runs out at the end of the month. Local Gardai said the form to bring them is a RF100a:
