My mate has just bought an Iphone 3gs from the north, its locked to 02 UK. Hes putting in an o2 UK sim and is just getting the message 'insert a valid sim with no pin lock to activate iphone' any ideas what this means? It wont work without or with the sim, it just brings up this message

update baseband to ipad 06.15.00 and install unltrsn0w through cydia would be your only option

Did he see it working? But yeah, unlock with ultrasnow (phone needs to be jailbroken first).

it prob won't work unless the sim can get signal and has no pin lock, o2 uk will unlock it for £15 and they take it from the credit on the sim

I'd be careful about doing that. GPS doesn't work with that baseband and you can't downgrade afaik. (hope I am wrong).

It's a last resort only really, Ive personally had no gps issues after updating to 06.15.00 on a few 3gs'

The error message is because there is a pin number on the sim card. He needs to put the sim into another phone and turn off the pin number for the sim card and then pop it back into the iPhone and it will work fine... The first time you turn on an iPhone either after it has been reset or fresh out of the box you need to put in a sim with no pin lock to activate it. Absolutely no need to jailbreak the phone in this instance!!!
