sleep and hard disks

    can you set the pc to sleep but leave the hard disks on

    they seem to spin down even when i set turn off hard disks to never

    i just heard it's bad to turn them on and off

    Wouldnt worry about it at all, better than leaving them spinning 24/7. Mechanical reliability isnt really an issue these days if everything is kept well. Poor ventialtion, dust, and knocks won't help however.

    Yup, mine stops spinning whenever it feels like it and the PC settings have nothing to do with it. It is a good feature (of the HDD) though as it means that I can do my weekly backup overnight with the PC set to shutdown on completion and I know that the HDD will shutdown at the same time.

    Spinning up and down seems to be a standard energy-saving feature of HDDs these days so I wouldn't worry unless it starts and stops too often which would potentially burn out the motor.
