I need to burn a 5GB file to DVD but the DVDs I have are a few years old and have 4.7GB capacity. I'm not familiar with dual layer DVDs - do these have a larger capacity and are they generally compatible with DVD writers from about 3 years ago or would I need a more recent model?

Could you zip the file(s) to bring them below 4.7gb's?

If the DVD writer supports DVD+r dl your fine,

    dual layer disks hold 8.5gb

if your drive says on the tray "dual layer" or "DVD-RAM" it will write to dual layer disks.

DVD RAM does not neccesarily mean the drive will write a DVD+R DL, also I've noticed many OEM drives that don't list any of the capabilities on the bezel!
You can download Imgburn, install it, open the program, click tools>Drive>Capabilities. If DVD+R DL is checked your good to go, the reason I say DVD+R DL is that DVD-R DL discs are not common at all, and DVD+R DLs are better all round (and likely cheaper to buy)

You could buy a cheap USB storage device. Even in the high street shops you'll get 8gb one for less than a tenner.
