    hi lads,

bought a pair of cycling shoes in the sales..... tried them on but never fastened the clips! they are a pair of spiuk zs11. they fit fine size wise but when i fasten the clips they are very tight. i can only get them to close slightly and even at that they are very tight......question is can i buy new straps? (the plastic piece with the treads on it that go into the clip itself)? another inch and they would be perfect!

Go back and see if they will exchange them for a bigger size. Always try them on.

Are you sure that there isn't some adjustment in the length of the straps? Often the straps can be made longer by pulling them out through a serrated grip thingy!!

Some Specialized shoes allow the entire racheted strap (i.e. the toothed plastic bit plus the strap to which it is attached that sits on top of your foot) to be re-centred - it is screwed in place on the non-buckle side and you can unscrew it, move it further towards or away from the buckle, and re-attach it. I've not seen the Spiuk shoes but maybe they allow some similar adjustment? If so though I'd expect it to be very visible.

Even if you found a longer toothed plastic section you might find that although you can then close the shoe easily, the main body of the strap that sits on top of your foot is off-center relative to your foot and could prove uncomfortable while riding. It could just be that the sizing/width of the shoes does not suit your foot size/shape - the length and width of the shoe are only part of getting the fit right, the shoe uppers need to suit your feet too. I've certainly found at least one brand of shoe (Giro) that suited my foot in length and width but the uppers were just too shallow for me with my relatively high arches and made for a shoe that was uncomfortably tight even at the loosest setting.

Similar as doozerie... My shoes' strap length can be set on 3 different positions, I just unscrew a screw (where the strap slides in) and change the setting as I want (loose, tight, etc.).
