The tax will only apply from the time you own it, you are not liable for any back tax.

The NCT will run up to the anniversary of the car which will mean if you NCT it now it will be valid until March 2012 where it will then need another test. All 10 year old cars now require an annual NCT.

Get the seller to NCT it before sale. If they aren't willing there are plenty of cars with NCT around.

Why did you need to do a 'background' check to discover these facts - didn't you check the paperwork on the windscreen? An 01 car couldn't possibly have finance outstanding so can't see the merits in doing a background check.

Ask the owner why he didn't submit the car for an NCT. As the previous poster said, tell him to submit it, otherwise walk away. It's a buyer's market and you'd be mad to buy it without an NCT.

By the way, if it's for sale from a dealer and he tries to sell it to you with a 'guarantee' that it will pass the NCT i.e. you buy the car, then submit it for an NCT and he will fix any problem that causes it to fail, run a mile.
