Stupid thing to do, but while changing the wiperblades, i let the wiper (without blade) swing down and cause a 4 inch crack at the bottom of the windscreen, I have windscreen cover but will it cover my stupidity or is it only for cracks cause by flying stones and the like....?

Of course it will, sure you don't know how it got there. Must've been some new years eve gurriers.

    What!

Some scumbag stole your wipers and broke your window in the process?

    Bastards!

here we have a poster decent enough to admit their stupidity and honest enough to be considering telling the insurance the truth or paying for it themselves! A first.

It's windscreen cover OP, you pay enough for it, just say you dont know how it got cracked. ;)

No need to lie, just bring it to your local windscreen centre (after doing a bit of research, some are terrible!), tell them you have a cracked windscreen that needs replacing & you have windscreen cover. An accident whether it is a stone or a wiper arm is still an accident.
Might be better to be economical with the truth rather than lie.

Funny story. A friend of mine has a vintage car, and his window was crap. So, after seeing that I got a new windscreen, it clicked. So he rang his windscreen company, told them some scumbags threw a rock through the window and he'd like a new one. Perfect.

Took his reg, details etc. and ordered the window. So he went in to have his new window installed (with his old window still intact) and it turned out that they'd ordered the wrong size of window. Also, the window they had gotten in was in worse condition than the one he was taking out. Realizing their mistake, and then obviously being pissed off that they probably couldn't return said new crappy wrong window, they threatened legal action against him for fraud!

Needless to say he left. Nothing ever came of it though, AFAIK.

    Nearly the correct way.
Call your insurance company and ask what window repair places they authorise, been a few threads recently of people getting windows done and then getting nasty letters when the fitters find out they made a mistake and the insurance company won't pay.

So if I bring it to an accredited windscreen centre do they get verification from the insurance company that it is covered? (before they replace it!)

Does the insurance company not send out an assessor to check the damage?

TBH one would imagine that it takes a lot more force to crack a windscreen, there must have been some tension on the screen, maybe it was badly installed, had something collided with your screen on the road, it could have been much worse.

Call your insurance company and ask who are their authorised installers. It's pretty clear if a windscreen is broken no need to send an assessor out.

Most windscreen policies cover accidental damage which this is anyway.

Just make sure there is no " in the process of cleaning, repairing, restoring, changing" exclusion first though.

If you have windscreen cover, there's no problem here with the way it was caused. It's an Accidental Damage. What I would check with your insurance company is whether they use an approved repairer. Some insurers reduce the limit of payout if you don't use their preferred windscreen company

I've had 3 windscreens replaced in the last 18 months and I wasn't asked how it cracked any of those times.

I cracked mine when I put a length of timber into the car, I told the truth and it was replaced without question. It was a €700 screen too
