I'd prefer to buy this from Amazon http://www.amazon.co.uk/Western-Digital-Elements-External-Desktop/dp/B003IPC21Y/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325364291&sr=8-1

Works out at about the same price with their free delivery. Wouldn't call either a bargain though.

Anybody know if this is 4800rpm or 7200rpm?

Has anyone opened up this unit to see what drive is inside.
I need another 3.5 sata drive and the price of this is not too bad.
Have a WD Green drive already and hoping this has the same inside.

Can't be any lower in spec. than the Green, can it? I don't mean that in a bad way.

Just as an observation, Hard Drives, over the counter, retail, in Dublin City Centre, are reaching piss taking prices..

€189 for a 750GB external? Ohh, I'll take two..

That is not a bad price for a 2TB.

Now, like every recent thread on external hard drives lately... Im just waiting for some MUPPET to comment (after not reading anything in the entire thread but scanning the thread topic) for the hundredth time on why the price of hard drives are gone up... Floods blah blah blah. :D

    Wait for it....

    Any second now....

I don't think 100 euro is a bad price, I don't think I ever saw a 2tb for less than one hundred euros.

Was a lot cheaper 6 months ago. I was going to put in a server and fill it with 8GB of space then.......

So this looks like a good price for now

..if you're angling that post towards myself, I know full well about the floods, but retail in Dublin are charging nearly €200 in some outlets for 750GB drives..

There's flood pricing.. then there's floods of piss pricing. I guess those outlets have achieved a, 'what our passing punters will tolerate' pricing, which seems to be working, as the shop is still busy..

If you just want a 2TB WD Drive.. with a view to gutting a NAS housing, Easons have a few lonely 2TB Western Digital NAS enclosures for €109, which isn't too shabby, if you're in need.. and stuck for a drive.

The record for overprice hard drive has to go to maplin btw, a mere 400 euros for a 3tb

Don't these drives have the usb circuitry installed directly on the drive? i.e. they don't have any sata connectors inside the case

    Edit
Looks like just the usb 3 versions, this one should be fine

The article in the link refers to the 2.5" WD drives. The OP is about the 3.5" versions. Btw, I bought a WD 500gig 2.5" USB 2 portable a couple of weeks ago. When I opened it to remove the drive the USB connections were native on the drive.

Without all the technical stuff, is this a good hard drive or not? Just want somewhere to store music and movies, that's reliable and does a simple job.

Yes it is, I have two. Buy it from Amazon.

I've the USB2 and USB3 Models, no heat issues or nothing, sound drives.

In your Toshiba Laptop? I don't know.

As an external, yes, it'll work with any brand laptop.

Here's a slightly better deal and it's in Ireland by a newly (3 months ago) opened Irish shop, for €89 plus post http://www.techmate.ie/stor-e-alu2-3-5-2tb.html

His postage seems to be €7.50. Admittedly he's a neighbour of mine. But i only saw this hard drive when i was looking for his phone number to say thanks for matching dells online price when i needed a new charger for my better half's laptop..... Not purposly plugging his shop.

    Anyway his name is Mike.

For a extra few quid would this one from Amazon not be a better choice considering it is USB 3.0

    Amazon

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,000 ✭✭✭fl4pj4ck

^^some of those 3.0 are USB native, which means the disc inside is not a standard Sata. now, if you plan not to take it out from the case then you're good. keep in mind that if you fry or drop the disc you won't be able to simply replace it with a new/bigger one like it's done in other external enclosures

Cheers, might just go for the normal 2.0 one as after reading some of the reviews on the 3.0 one on Amazon it seems it can be quite noisy.

Any idea which Easons? I have a WD 2TB MyBook World Edition Nas already and I am running out of space. Need another one...

Got this exact drive from same place in June for under 50 delivered.

Purchased 3, if I'd checked Thai's weather forecast, might have bought the lot.
