    Hey lads,having a few issues with a Philips 4000 series LCD tv I bought at christmas.
    Basically I have a satbox connected through hd cable and the picture is kind of grainy and almost as if thetes lights flickering in the picture.under certain conditions it seems fine but then reds or blacks or Grey's appear grainy and just not right.
    When I connect to my 6 year old JVC the picture is perfect so I'm assuming its a setting somewhere I'm missing.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated as its doing my head in.hope its not just the quality of the t.v.

    Switch off all contrast, noise and picture enhancements/dynamic etc. Put "sharpness" at half way or off depending on menu. All those settings are to try and improve analogue signals. You can only make an HDMI signal worse.

    Make sure you have no sunlight in room or lights shining on the TV. There are NO domestic TVs that can give their best picture without somewhat subdued room lighting. No TV can do a good picture with lamp or sun directly reflecting from screen.

    If you have a DVD or BD player put in a Lucas Arts title with the "THX" logo on the box. Go to main DVD menu and look for a "THX" or "setup" icon. It will then play a sequence of test cards and instructions so you can adjust the backlight, contrast, Brightness (all set too high by default) and possibly "Gamma"(between 1.8 and 2.2 is usually correct). Set colours to EBU if there is such a setting (often the default is for a PC / Game console).

    You should be suitably gobsmacked at quality.

    @Watty

    I have only just bought a HDTV (Samsung 3D Smart TV) and have read about optimisng the video output.

    I have read that you need "blue filter" glasses to complete the THX optimisation. Is this true? and if yes, are they available here in ireland?

    TIA
