The 2012 edition of the Dakar starts in a couple of days:

It appears to be only available here (Ireland) on Eurosport; anyone know if any of the terrestrial/FTA channels will be carrying it?

They put up a summary of the day and they're in english.

Stanley Watt is Irish,,,Cresent KTM 450.....But dont you know the neighbours will probably claim him,,,,i think he used to be in the Irish Ranger Wing,,,hence his best assett is navigateing,,,

Terrible news about Jorge Martinez, RIP.

I know 'Motorsport Is Dangerous' (to quote every event warning sign and entry form I've ever seen) and that the entrants to these events accept that there's a certain risk involved, but it happens so relatively infrequently these days that it's still something of a shock. Which is a good thing in a way, I suppose.


Anyhow, today's stage is the first of the 'proper' ones, at 487km of liaison and 290km of special stage:

It'll be interesting to see if the Hummers reliability can be improved over yesterday

He did indeed! If he keeps up that rate of progress, the 10 minutes he dropped on the first stage mightn't be the disaster it first appeared.

Despres gets stuck in the muck, Coma takes a load of time out of him, and the organisers 'adjust' the times!

Unfortunately, this carry on is no surprise to anyone who has followed the Daker (or the Tour de France) for any length of time

same with the ACO and the lemans 24h aswell can get a bit ridicules at times
