    Looking for advice.

I'm 6ft, and over 14 stone (not weighing myself again till jan 7 for obvious Christmas reasons) and riding since May/June. Getting out once a week at moment (three times this week as no work) and cycling on a machine in the gym 3 or 4 times a week.

My problem is that I still have a sore/bruised arse. I have altered seat position, used chamois glide and hoped my arse would simply harden up. Despite this I still have bruised seat bones.

On reading up I seem to have tried most solutions, except the most obvious one. http://www.bikesportmichigan.com/features/saddlecomfort.shtml

Namely spending money on good cycling shorts. Like many newbies I have used aldi/lidl stuff and splashed out on cheap dhb shorts (about 30 euro )

So now I am prepared to bite the bullet and spend up to 100 euro on padded bib tights, but which ones?

Can anybody recommend a well padded pair suitable for an overweight 49 year old who is tied of having a bruised arse.

    Thanks

I've bought dhb stuff from wiggle and been happy. The big difficulty with online purchase is sizing though so check what Xl really means in terms of waist size etc.

    Hi there,

it may well be your saddle that needs changing, I don't know which one you have. You can always pop in to one of the LBS and get a test one for a week. I had to change from a solid to a cutaway, a selle max,,though there are many others. You may also need a wider saddle to accommodate your sit bones.

then again once a week may not be giving you a chance to get used to it either. I also went from aldi to bigger named brands but it was the change of saddle that made the difference as it was after about 35-40k into it that I was feeling the pain. :D

My saddle is a Selle Italia shiver. I went to a LBS and they measured my seat bones at 133. He said that is not particularly wide. In relation to my rides i am only doing 1 ride or so a week at the moment, was out 4-5 times in summer/autumn but still had the problem.

Maybe you need to ramp up the time on the saddle a bit slower? Try a dhb Roubaix bib shorts, some chamois cream and then take a break between each ride. When you sit on the saddle, if it feels tender, then skip that session. "Rinse and repeat"..

I developed some serious bruising on my sit bone during the summer. Very large bruising and was pure agony to sit on. As it happened I was at a spinning class and the trainer pointed out that my saddle was not straight. When I adjusted the saddle I have not redeveloped the bruising.
BTW it took about 1month off the bike for the bruising to heal.

In terms of bib tights. I have a pair of santini, a pair of assos airlock and two dhb pairs. IMHO the dhb are best. They came in at about €50 ish last year and year before.
I cycled 80km in them the other day in driving rain and several hailstone showers. Despite temps around 3-4 degrees I was too warm if anything.
Only problem with tights/shirts is that it's a personal thing. Loads of folks love Assos, but they don't suit my rear end.
