Hi, am looking to book a city break to Rome for my boyfriend as a 30th birthday present. I was hoping to go around July and was hoping if anyone had any suggestions with regards to hotel recommendations, places to stay in? It would only be for 4 nights or thereabouts. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

We stated in the Londra and Cargill. Its a short walk from the Trevi fountain and Spanish steps.
Plenty to see and you will be on the go all the time. The underground is handy but beware pickpockets, (was done myself despite been warned ). Dine off the main squares as its far cheaper and get a car taxi from airport as the minibus taxis tend to wait for a full load.

Buy bottled water from vending machines on underground (less than half the price).
Get a ticket for the city tour hop on hop off bus, that way you can see all the sites.

Yes its a nice hotel, think it cost us €730 for 4 nights b&b, nerver used restaurant as there are so many places to go to dine out.

Continental breakfast only, but make up a few rolls and stuff them in your backpack for lunch on the go.

We stayed in hotel lirico, about 10mins from all the major attractions, piazza venezia etc. nice clean and cheap hotel i would definitely recommend. Dont bother with the boat trip on the river, its rubbish!

I stayed in the IQ in December, lovely hotel and great staff :) Its about 5/10 minutes walk to the Collosseum/Forum etc too which was handy, and not much further to Trevi etc.

I've also stayed in Diocleziana beside Termini which I liked if you're looking for something on a tighter budget-its four star, has a small gym, and the perk for us was the freshly stocked minibar daily although it had no alcohol it was lovely to come home each evening to a fridge full of fizzy drinks, juice and bottled water. The rooms are clean, the breakfast was pretty decent and the bathrooms were fab with nice jacuzzi tubs :D

Stayed in this apartment. It was perfect. Location was excellent - close to Termini and the Collosseum. Previously had used hotels in Rome but this worked out perfectly for us.

Thinking of heading to Rome for the mid-term break for a short visit, checked out all the above hotels and all seem decent, can anybody else recommend any other hotel? also with Ryanair, is the hotel far from the city centre? as I remember in Paris it was over an hour by bus!

Here are a couple more. At Barberini metro station, close to the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Villa Borghese Park, Hotel Cinquantatre is a nice mid-range hotel. The upper rooms have their own terrace.

More upscale is Hotel Turner, a reasonably priced 4-star hotel, further up in the same area.

do not get a taxi from the airport, you are almost certain to be ripped off. get the bus instead, leaves every 15mins or so and costs 8 euro, takes you to termini.

bear in mind rome ain't cheap, eating & drinking is pricey - but public transport can be - 1 euro for a one way ticket on the underground.

if you want to do tours of the colosseum or vatican etc ask at your hotel and they will organise it - prices for a tour cost from about 30-60 euro per person, a trip to the colosseum or vatican without a tourguide to explain the history isn't really worth it.

you will probably also need air con in your room in summer - this will be extra - cost me 12 euro per night, would have been impossible to sleep without it.

Me and the missus went to Rome in February last year for a weekend. A few people here on boards recommended Blue Hostel near the main train station. Not sure why they call it a hostel because it isn't really, its more of a 'boutique' hotel. It has good reviews on tripadvisor(Mine included!) and I managed to haggle them down to €90 a night for a double room but I think that was because it was low season?

We walked nearly everywhere, can't imagine doing that in July with the heat though! I found it warm even in February!

Just be warned that July will be very hot. I went July 2011 and we ended up going out in the morning and having naps in the afternoon and going out again in the evening. Never again would I return to Rome in July!

We stayed in Hotel Romantica near Termini and booked it through Booking.com for €60 a night. Our room didn't have air conditioning but it had a balcony (we rinsed out our clothes each night and hung them out to dry) and reception gave us an electric fan.

Also there are water fountains everywhere will lovely cold water. Very convenient. We also noticed that even though we easily drank litres of water a day that we were never stuck finding a loo as we sweated it out

The train from the airport to termini costs e14. Dont bother buying water, just go around with a bottle and fill uo when you need it. As mentioned above, lovely clean cold water from many fountains around rome.
I didnt find rome at all expensive to be honest. Even eating on main streets it was much cheaper than home

Hi, just wondering if I could get a bit of advice. I am taking wife to Rome for her birthday in Feb. It will be last chance to get away for awhile as we are due second child at end of May.

Unfortunately, cash is abit tight and so I was wondering, if someone could recommend somewhere central and reasonably priced to stay? Somewhere that we could come back to easily during the day if my wife needs to take a nap or a rest would be great. Neither of us have been to Rome before so havent a clue!

    All suggestions much appreciated!

If youre looking B&B few months ago we stayed there:
    http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187791-d1192390-Reviews-Suites_Trastevere-Rome_Lazio.html
Room are clean, very friendly owner maybe just the breakfast selection wasn't great . Its close to tram ( 2min) and even if you want to walk is about 30-40min to centre of Rome.
Just beside that is restaurant New Station.

Thanks for that info. Just wondering if anyone knows of a place maybe around Piazza Augusto Imperatore or Trastevere?

Get the train from airport, it is fast ( 30 mins) and you get right into the centre.
We are a couple of ex-pats living here who give advice and help with phone-in translations.
There are a few good hotels at keen rates, but you need to research a bit.
Rome is not expensive, unless you splurge.
The tours are often a bad idea. Buy a good guide-book for 10 to 15 euro and take your time. Pre-book Colloseum and other visits by internet or through the friendly tourist kiosks, in Via Nazionale or elsewhere.
Rome is great any time. Get a very central place to stay. Avoid long bus or taxi drives.
Be close to the action and research well before you come.
    Good luck
