Struggling at the moment

I'm just wondering am I receiving everything that I am entitled to? I'm finding it very hard and stressful at the moment.

Myself and my wife receive JSB. I get €188 + €14.90 (half payment for child) and my wife gets €124.80 + €14.90 (half payment for child). So we have a total of €342.60 a week.

We've looked into getting rent allowance but our rent is above the maximum limit and we still have a few months left on our lease so moving isn't an option. Our rent takes most of our weekly budget at €200. This leaves us with €142.60 a week for bills, food, supporting a baby, etc.

With Christmas just over we're finding it very hard, like a lot of others I'm sure. I just wanted to make sure we didn't miss any entitlements we could be entitled to?

    Hi
you sound like your circumstances are similar to ours (married couple 1 child). I assume that because you state that your getting JSB then you have not been claiming over 15mths. After 15mths you would also be entitled to fuel allowance.

Have you asked your landlord if they are willing to reduce the rent? We had to ask for a small monthly reduction to allow us to claim rent supplement - this was mid contract also.
Just to make sure you have put yourself on the housing list also - I know our cwo wanted us on the list in addition to the fact that we had been in the property a while.

Have you also applied for the medical card?

Apart from that, the rent is the biggest problem for you.

It does sound like talking to your landlord would be the best course of action. Ask your landlord for a reduction to bring you down within range of rent supplement. If he says no, ask if it would be ok to mutually agree to end the lease.

At the end of the day, if you don't have the money to pay, it's in the landlords best interest to try and come to some sort of mutually beneficial resolution with you.

I don't think your landlord would win a case in court against you if your defense is that you just don't have the money. Anyone else have any experience on that?

It would probably cost your landlord too much to try and force you to pay. Your landlord would also be benefitted through you giving advance notice or ending the lease or working out a lower payment.

So all in all, talking to your landlord and working something out seems like a win win.

get on the council housing list and apply for medical cards. Talk to your landlord explain the problem. I hope you can come to some resolution and get the rent reduced. We were in a similar situation but we got our rent down and thankfully are now ok so I hope it works out for you.
