Checking true mileage?

    Hi all,

The engine light is on in my friends VW Golf. After trying to read the diagnostics with VAGCOM software without success, it almost seems as the cabling was broken (most likely accidentally).

I dont know alot about cars (just software :-D ) Is it possible to read the true mileage OBD cable or is it stored in memory somewhere else?

If not can anyone suggest how we might find out if the mileage had been changed on the car or somewhere that can check this for us?

    Thanks!

Service booklet and NCT or DOE certs could give you a rough guess if its correct maybe?

It was NCT'd just before he bought it. Its a UK import.
I'm guessing we dont have anything else to go by?

    Fix the cabling?

3 garages have looked at it and none were able to establish the issue including a VW garage?
If the cabling is fixed - is it possible to tell if the mileage has been adjusted?

Milage is stored on the ECU as well, as far as I know. It'd be one way to check. That or shelling out a few euro for a mileage check from a car check website?

Looks good to me - how reliable is this considering the car was imported from the UK?

Best to have a look at their site, looks good to me. I've seen them mentioned here before.

Yea you can check the proper mileage using vcds...it is stored in the ecu...people who clock them are only changing the reading that is on the clocks.

It only works on some cars, I've tried a few cars and it didn't read the mileage.

Yes as Neil says it only works with certain engines.

What year is the car and what engine is in it?

Forgot to say that it will only read ecu's that support edc 15/16 protocol.

Try hpicheck.co.uk they have the biggest mileage database for UK vehicles. Also experian have a large mileage database. Try both to be doubley sure. Best is to read from the brain so hopefully you'll get that sorted
